Job summary

Kansas City Public Schools in Kansas City, Missouri seeks an Instructional Support Assistant for Garfield Elementary to assist Pre-K instructors in planning and implementing child development activities. You will help with language, social, and motor skill development and support Kindergarten readiness.

The role requires at least 60 college hours with 24 in early childhood, Missouri substitute certification, and ability to pass safety checks.

Qualifications

  • Sixty college hours with a 2.5 GPA, 24 hours in early childhood/youth development.
  • Missouri state substitute teacher certification issued by DESE.
  • Pass Family Care Safety Registry background check (FCSR).
  • MODHSS Medical Examination Report for Caregivers and Staff (TB test results)

Responsibilities

  • Perform data entry related to student learning and behavior per program guidelines.
  • Create and maintain parent information boards and required KCPS documents (attendance, health, meals).
  • Prepare, organize, clean and sanitize classroom materials per licensing and best practices.
  • Assist instructors in team teaching, planning and scheduling daily routines.
  • Monitor and reinforce appropriate student behavior throughout the Pre-K day.
  • Work with peers, consultants, parents and volunteers.
  • Attend professional development sessions as mandated.
  • Plan individual and group learning activities to stimulate language, social, emotional, STEAM and motor skills.
  • Coach children in caring for equipment, materials and self for safety and health.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PURPOSE OF JOB:

To work with Pre-Kindergarten certified instructors to effectively plan, coordinate and carry out child development and learning activities. To work with the instructor to guide children in activities designed to promote the social, physical, and intellectual growth needed for Kindergarten preparedness by performing the following duties.

What You'll Be Doing: (Responsibilities)

  • Perform a variety of basic duties to assist the classroom instructor including but not limited to: data entry related to student learning and behavior per program guidelines, creating and maintaining parent information boards and completing required KCPS documents related to attendance, student health and meals served.
  • Prepare, organize, cleanup and sanitize classroom materials while adhering to DHSS Child Care Licensing, MO Accreditation requirements, and NAEYC and Trauma Sensitive best practices.
  • Assist instructors in team teaching, team planning and scheduling daily and emergency response routines.
  • Monitor and reinforce appropriate student behavior throughout the educational and extended learning Pre-Kindergarten day.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with peers, consultants, parents and classroom volunteers.
  • Participate in program and parent involvement activities, modeling and coaching appropriate student behavior and serving as an ambassador for the Early Learning Department.
  • Attend all professional development sessions as mandated per program requirements or program administrator request.
  • Plan individual and group learning activities to stimulate student growth in language, social, emotional, STEAM and motor skills.
  • Coach children in, and model the practice of, caring for equipment, materials and self with a goal of developing habits of safe and healthy care for self and surroundings.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:None

To Be Successful at This Job, You'll Need To: (Qualifications)

  • Sixty (60) college hours with a grade point average of at least 2.5. Twenty-four (24) of the sixty (60) hours must be in early childhood, youth development or child/family related courses. *Transcript must be on file prior to hireORdocumentation proving applicant has satisfactorily passed the Para Pro certification test.
  • Missouri state substitute teacher certification issued by DESE.
  • Skills in working with young children and their families.
  • Desire to work with Pre-Kindergarten children.
  • Familiarity with urban school districts.
  • Ability to pass Family Care Safety Registry background check (FCSR).
  • Hold or obtain an approved MODHSS Medical Examination Report for Caregivers and Staff (including TB test results)

In Order to #LevelUp in This Role, You'll Need: (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Documented three (3) years successful experience working with young children and families in an urban setting.
  • Trained in, and experienced with, Desired Results Developmental Profile 2015 assessment.
  • Completion of a two or four-year degree in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education.
  • Knowledge of DESE approved early education curriculum(s).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of work year: In Person, 8 hours per day; 5 days/week; 205 days
