Job summary

A higher education institution is seeking a Pre-Health Advisor to provide academic advising and support for pre-health science students. The advisor will coordinate activities, develop workshops, and supervise peer mentors. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree and excellent communication skills. This is a full-time, onsite role in Atlanta, Georgia.

Qualifications

Overview

Position Summary: The Pre-Health Advisor reports directly to the Director of Health Careers and will provide academic advising, supervision of student organizations, and supervision of peer-mentors, and student support to pre-health science students.


Responsibilities


  • Advises and coordinates activities of the advisement program for pre-health science students;

  • Develops and presents workshops to enhance literacy around admission requirements for graduate and professional school, conduct interviews, and assist with composing committee letters for professional schools;

  • Participates in Spelman College recruitment events, and meeting with prospective students;

  • Maintains a comprehensive database of advisees and document advising sessions with students using college advising software;

  • Supervises peer-mentors and obtain data from each mentor regarding student engagement;

  • Attends various meetings regarding general advising;

  • Supervises RSO executive team members;

  • Participates in regional and national advising meetings;

  • Works collaboratively with the Director on information sessions and workshops coordinated by the Health Sciences Office.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with at least 3-5 years of related experience required.


This position requires excellent oral communication and presentation skills when providing information and responding to questions from students, parents, employees and the general public in one-on-one or group situations. Excellent writing skills are also required for preparing various forms of business correspondence, e.g. letters, reports, emails. Also, must be able to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Good proofreading skills are essential.


This position requires a strong customer service focus, communication, and time management skills. Professional demeanor with the ability to interface with internal and external customers with diplomacy and tact is essential. Independent judgment is necessary to plan, prioritize and organize a diversified workload with attention to detail. Work requires fact-finding and compilation skills plus ability to perform a variety of tasks simultaneously, at times with little supervision. Must possess intermediate to advanced skills in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) to generate letters, spreadsheets, graphs, reports and PowerPoint presentations.


Evening and weekends may be required to support the on-going programming of the office.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Master’s degree in the area of counseling and/or advisement. Prior pre-health professions advising is strongly preferred.

  • Experience in higher education preferred.

  • Application knowledge with Canva and other forms of social media are preferred (i.e. GroupMe, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: sit, walk, use hands to handle office supplies, operate computer and other office equipment, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to: reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to: stand, stoop, climb, taste and smell, and lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
