PacifiCorp is hiring a Pre-Apprentice Lineman/Groundman in Portland, OR. This entry-level role supports journey-level workers in installing, maintaining, repairing, and operating company facilities and equipment.

Groundman candidates must commit to an apprenticeship within 24 months of hire and may bid locations in Utah, Idaho, or Wyoming as part of progression. The position is full-time and onsite with comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma, GED, or proof of equivalent.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Able to work extended hours, pre-arranged overtime and outages.
• Pre-placement physical capacity screening will be conducted.
• Ability to communicate and assimilate information effectively.
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and push/pull tools weighing over 100 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Wear protective equipment for lines work (hot sticks, rubber goods, etc.).
• Prepare and assemble line apparatus for work.
• Drive and operate vehicles/equipment.
• Keep work areas clean and organized; manage scrap and materials.
• Assist with loading materials onto trucks/trailers.
• Assist with underground apparatus installation and wire pulling.
• Support lineman in various bucket operations and pole transformer prep.

General Purpose

A Groundman is an entry level position in the lines department and performs a variety of labor duties necessary to assist journey level workers and others in installing, maintaining, repairing and/or operating company facilities and equipment.

Groundman (External Candidates - Provisional Status)

The Groundman must obtain an apprenticeship within 24 months of hiring or forfeit their employment.

The Pre-Apprentice Lineman (Internal Candidates) employees will be required to bid locations in Utah, Idaho and/or Wyoming, after successfully passing the final Journeyman Lineman Exam.

Groundman Responsibilities

• Hand lineman must wear necessary protective equipment needed for work being performed (i.e. (hot sticks, rubber goods, blankets, gloves, etc.)
• Prepare and assemble various line apparatus required for particular work being performed.
• Drive and operate the various vehicles and/or equipment.
• Keep work areas clean and organized. Pickup scrap wire, boxes, and other discarded materials.
• Keep unauthorized people away from work area.
• Stocking trucks with material commonly used on a daily basis and maintaining vehicles (fueling, cleaning, organizing, etc.)
• Use various hand and power tools.
• Assist with loading various materials onto trucks and/or trailers.

Groundman performs a variety of physical activities:

• Digging
• Assemble conduit and place in trench.

• Assist with installation of various underground apparatus.
• Assist with pulling wire.
• Must be knowledgeable with the materials needed and process to strip and terminate underground cables.
• May be required to assist lineman in second bucket while working on lines.
• Prepare pole mount transformers and assist with installation.
• May prepare work orders, requisitions and other routine reports as assigned.

Requirements

• Must have a high school diploma, GED, or proof of equivalent.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Be available to work extended hours, prearranged overtime and after-hours outages as required by the company.
• This position will require a post-offer, pre-placement physical capacity screening, conducted by a licensed physical therapist, to ensure the candidate meets the physical demands of the job.
• The screening will assess only the identified physical demands of the job being applied for.
• Ability to communicate with others and to assimilate and understand information, in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
• Ability to make sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
• Ability to perform duties involving prolonged standing, sitting, crouching and/or stooping.
• Ability to push, pull, and position tools, equipment, and structural material weighing in excess of 100 pounds.
• Ability to lift loads weighing up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to work on smooth or uneven surfaces and under varying climatic conditions.
• Ability to work with both arms overhead.
• Ability to grip and hold lines and ropes with up to 75 pounds weight.
• Ability to operate assigned equipment and vehicles.

Physical Demands

Since the Groundman is expected to progress most likely to a Lines career, the physical requirements of Lineman requires the following:

• Lifting in excess of 75 lbs. from floor to waist and waist to overhead.
• Carrying in excess of 75 lbs. with both hands, and pushing and pulling in excess of 100 lbs. of exertional force.
• Sustained, awkward positions/postures including bending and twisting at the waist and neck, reaching forward, to the side, across the body and overhead.
• Forceful grip and pinch; manipulation of small objects; balancing on one or both legs during dynamic activities.
• Manipulation of large objects during activities requiring balance and sustained awkward postures.

Preference

• Have a current and valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with no restrictions except intrastate.
• Proof of an NJATC test score of 5+ Electrical Aptitude Test.
• Line school graduate.
• Industry and climbing experience.
