The role requires a high school diploma, about one year of phlebotomy or specimen processing experience, and certification per policy.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma required.
• Experience: One year of relevant phlebotomy and/or specimen processing /laboratory experience, preferred.
• Licensure/certification/registration: Phlebotomy Certification - ASCP, NHA, ASPT, AMT or a national accrediting agency approved by Laboratory Senior Leadership, required. MLA certification from ASCP, CMLA certification from AMT, preferred.
• Additional skills required: For facilities where phlebotomy is a requirement of the role, the certification must be obtained within six months or hire. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.
• Knowledge of medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tasks.
• Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.
• Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
• Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff and the public.
• Ability to follow written protocols.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to communicate clearly.

Responsibilities

• Team member is responsible for pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens, to include order processing, specimen verification, centrifugation, aliquoting, etc.
• Team member validates and processes specimens delivered to the laboratory, facilitating timely and appropriate specimen preparation for testing.
• Team member may be responsible for performing phlebotomy.
• Team member must be able to make decisions and solve problems, recognizing when to involve leadership support.
• Team member is responsible for ensuring policies and procedures are followed.
• Team member will advise and assist in the orientation and training of other personnel on equipment and software, as necessary.
