Job summary

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of clinical nursing experience as an RN.

Job description

Statement Of Primary Purpose

This is a designated evening position supporting the Practical Nursing program’s evening cohort. The Nursing Instructor must have the ability and willingness to teach primarily evening courses (after 5:00 p.m.) and to supervise clinical experiences during night shift hours (7:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.) in support of student learning and required clinical competencies.

The Evening Nursing Instructor facilitates student learning by implementing approved curriculum, preparing and delivering course content in alignment with program outcomes, and assessing student performance in accordance with established grading and clinical evaluation standards. The instructor maintains accurate instructional and clinical records, supports student progression, and ensures compliance with all program, college, and accreditation requirements.

In addition, the Evening Practical Nursing Instructor provides instruction and supervision in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings; collaborates with clinical partners and program faculty to support high-quality clinical learning experiences; and participates in departmental, divisional, and college-wide service activities as assigned.

Classification

This position is required to work the 9-month plus an 8 week summer session schedule.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities
  • Ability and willingness to teach primarily evening courses (after 5:00 p.m.) and supervise clinical experiences during night shift hours (7:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.).
  • Maintain all professional credentials and certifications required by accrediting agencies, regulatory bodies, and institutional policies.
  • Demonstrate current expertise in the discipline and remain informed of emerging trends, best practices, and advancements within the field.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative, professional relationships with clinical preceptors, clinical staff, and healthcare partners.
  • Assess and monitor the quality, effectiveness, and progression of students’ learning experiences.
  • Provide instruction, supervision, mentoring, and support to students in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings to promote competency development and skill proficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with all college, program, accreditation, and clinical agency policies and procedures.
  • Provide high quality instruction utilizing diverse course delivery formats, including in-person, synchronous and asynchronous online, HyFlex, and hybrid modalities, while maintaining consistent learning outcomes and student engagement.
  • Maintain an instructional workload in accordance with division, college, and accreditation standards and policies.
  • Prepare, deliver, and assess assigned courses in alignment with approved curriculum, course outlines, and the published class schedule.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records related to attendance, grades, assessments, and other course requirements.
  • Foster a learning environment that appropriately challenges, engages, supports, and respects students while promoting academic success and professional growth.
  • Ensure course and program learning outcomes are effectively delivered and assessed in accordance with syllabus requirements and program objectives.
  • Participate in scheduled student evaluations of instruction and utilize feedback to support continuous improvement.
  • Maintain regular office hours and provide timely assistance to students in accordance with division and college policies.
  • Prepare and submit required college reports, documentation, and records accurately and within established deadlines.
  • Assist with student recruitment, advising, mentoring, retention, and progression efforts.
  • Participate in the evaluation, selection, and procurement of instructional equipment, supplies, technology, and learning resources.
  • Support and participate in college functions, community engagement activities, and official events, including commencement ceremonies and program recognition events.
  • Serve on college, division, and program committees and actively participate in meetings and shared governance activities.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development activities to maintain professional competence, instructional effectiveness, and discipline-specific expertise.
  • Develop and maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, clinical partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Assist the Dean and Program Coordinator with faculty recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, and professional development activities.
Additional Duties And Responsibilities

Perform other duties as assigned in support of the program, division, and the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the College.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Required: Possess a BSN with a commitment to obtain MSN within 3 years or Teaching and Learning certificate or another method of compliance with NCBON rule 21
NCAC 36 .0318-C.5 is required prior to hire or within 3 years of hire.
Preferred: MSN

Skills
Knowledge and Skills
  • Required: 2 years of clinical nursing experience as a registered nurse.
  • Knowledge of current nursing practice for registered and licensed practical nurses.
  • Desire to teach and guide nursing students in clinical, lab, and simulation.
  • Knowledge of current nursing practice for registered and licensed practical nurses
  • Current CPR certification (BLS required).
  • Current TB screening within the past 12 months.
  • Up-to-date immunizations as required for clinical placement, with titers or approved waivers accepted where applicable, or the ability to meet all clinical onboarding requirements within established timelines.
  • Preferred: Community college teaching experience.
Physical Demands

Demonstrate proficiency in the operation, maintenance, and instructional use of all program-related laboratory, simulation, and clinical equipment, and effectively instruct students in the safe and appropriate use of such equipment.

Requires prolonged periods of standing during instructor-led classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction activities.

Must be able to meet the emotional, mental, and physical demands associated with an acute care clinical environment.

Licensing Requirement

Possess and maintain an active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina or a current Multistate Compact RN license in good standing.

Possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.

Working Conditions and Environment

Ability to travel routinely throughout and beyond the College’s service area to clinical education sites, healthcare partners, and other program related locations, including occasional overnight travel for professional development activities, conferences, accreditation meetings, and other job related events.

Equipment Operation

Ability to demonstrate and operate all equipment required to perform the duties of a Practical Nurse in clinical, laboratory, and instructional settings.

Ability to effectively use standard office equipment and learning management systems (LMS) to support instructional, administrative, and communication functions.
