Practical Nurse Instructor – Education Department

Overview

The Instructor is entrusted with imparting the knowledge and skills that each student needs to be successful by providing quality delivery of assigned courses while ensuring that all students achieve competency in the course objectives. Instructors evaluate and resolve student questions, issues and problems, and ensure appropriate action is taken to the satisfaction of the student, Dorsey Schools, and/or regulatory agencies in compliance with policy, procedures, and legal requirements. Instructors are to be motivating, fair and impartial, creative, dedicated, and professional.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver quality classroom instruction in lecture, clinical, and/or laboratory format based on approved course outlines, utilizing a variety of materials and teaching methods that address all learning modalities.
  • Assess student learning using appropriate methods and demonstrate effectiveness with strong outcomes in retention, success, and attendance.
  • Conduct engaging lecture or lab sessions, motivate students by demonstrating sensitivity, and actively involve them in classroom discussions and activities.
  • Advise students on attendance, grades, and issues to ensure successful completion; contact absentee students by text, email, or phone to improve retention.
  • Manage classroom environment in compliance with campus policies, including attendance, punctuality, and professionalism.
  • Prepare classroom by listing instructor name, contact information, date, class name, day’s objectives, and next session objectives on the whiteboard.
  • Monitor supplies and equipment; inform campus personnel as necessary.
  • Participate in faculty, staff, committee, and in‑service meetings; attend commencement strongly encouraged.
  • Demonstrate professional growth through membership in associations, continuing education, relevant experience, research, and awareness of current practices.
  • Attend seminars, conventions, field visits, vendor shows, and equipment exhibits to gain enrichment; author professional writing.
  • Support other departments such as Financial Aid, Admissions, and Career Services.
  • Ensure all educational activity is conducted legally and ethically.
  • Demonstrate continuous improvement via the Faculty Development Program or other criteria (e.g., success rate, retention rate).
  • Maintain employer relationships with at least annual contacts, including one site visit or phone conversation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and active listening.
  • Strong time‑management skills and ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, show resourcefulness, and solve problems.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow institutional policies and procedures.
  • Positive attitude toward school activities.
  • Proficiency with basic office equipment, computers, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, unencumbered Michigan licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in nursing science.
  • At least one year documented experience related to the course taught.
  • Individual with an associate degree in Nursing (ADN) who is actively pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) is qualified to teach in the Practical Nurse program.
  • Courses not entitled “NUR” may be taught by an LPN or higher, or someone with a bachelor’s degree in the subject taught; documentation of enrollment in a BSN program required.
  • Exception paperwork must be filed with the Board of Nursing prior to teaching; this exception is valid for two years.
Working / Physical Demands

The job may require working late and occasional weekends. The employee regularly sees, talks, and hears. Frequent standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods are required, with sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard, and other office equipment.
