Job summary

Farnsworth Group is seeking a Power Transmission & Distribution Engineer/Project Manager to join our consulting team in Lisle, IL, with posting locations in Belleville, Lisle, Chicago, IL, or St. Louis, MO.

You will lead power projects from concept through completion, coordinating cross‑disciplinary teams and managing budgets, schedules, and client interfaces. The role requires a PE license or PMP preferred, 7+ years T&D experience, and strong knowledge of industry standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET-accredited).
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology or construction management (ABET-accredited).
  • 7+ years of T&D experience in consulting or utility environments.
  • 3+ years managing power industry projects.
  • Working knowledge of NESC, IEEE, NERC and utility standards.
  • Proficiency in ETAP, SKM, CYME, PLS-CADD, or similar tools.
  • Design experience for 69kV–500kV systems preferred.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • PE license and/or PMP certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, and grow client relationships; support business development and proposals.
  • Serve as primary client contact; ensure communication and high-quality delivery.
  • Lead and manage transmission, distribution and substation projects from planning to closeout; route siting, surveying, permitting, estimating, and coordination.
  • Provide leadership and coordination across electrical, civil, survey, environmental, and structural teams.
  • Oversee project schedules, budgets, forecasting, scope, risk, change management, and staffing.
  • Develop engineering drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and project execution plans; QA/QC processes.
  • Perform transmission/distribution system design (overhead/underground) and feeder/cable replacements.
  • Prepare substation design packages including equipment arrangements and buswork designs.
  • Conduct line routing, load flow, short circuit, and coordination studies; voltage drop and sag-tension analyses.

Farnsworth Group is seeking a Power Transmission & Distribution Engineer/Project Manager to join our growing consulting team at any of the locations listed below. You will be responsible for leading power industry projects from concept through completion, with a focus on electric transmission and distribution design. This role requires strong client-facing skills, project financial ownership, and the ability to manage interdisciplinary engineering and construction activities to design, analyze and modernize power infrastructure.

What You’ll Do:
  • Build, maintain, and grow client relationships, support business development and proposal development
  • Serve as the primary client contact, ensuring communication, alignment, and high‑quality delivery
  • Lead and manage transmission, distribution and substation projects from planning through closeout, including route selection, siting, surveying, permitting, engineering, estimating, and construction coordination
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and coordination across multi-disciplinary teams (electrical, civil, survey, environmental, structural)
  • Prepare and/or oversee project schedules, budgets, forecasting, scope, risk management, change management, and staffing
  • Develop engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates and implement project execution plans, project controls, and QA/QC processes
  • Perform transmission and distribution system design (overhead & underground) including distribution equipment, feeder replacement, cable replacement, and new feeder installation
  • Prepare substation design packages including siting, physical equipment arrangements, and equipment designs such as buswork, transformers, breakers, isolators, protective relaying systems, and grounding systems
  • Conduct line routing, load flow, short circuit, and coordination studies as well as voltage drop, sag‑tension, wire selection, and pole loading calculations
  • Provide technical input during client meetings and presentations as well as internal design team meetings
What You’ll Need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited institution,or
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology or construction management from an ABET accredited institution
  • 7+ years of T&D experience in consulting or utility environments
  • 3+ years managing power industry projects
  • Working knowledge of industry design standards, including NESC, IEEE, NERC and relevant utility standards
  • Proficiency in tools such as ETAP, SKM, CYME, PLS-CADD, or similar
  • Design experience and working knowledge of 69kV to 500kV systems preferred
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to present complex information to internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project financials, forecasting, scope, schedules, contracts, and risk
  • Proven success developing client relationships and leading multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license and/or PMP Certification preferred
