We are looking for a Power Systems Software Engineer to join our team working to improve our industry-leading Advanced Protection Assessment (formerly PSSCAPE) software. APA is used for power system protection engineering studies and analysis. You will be responsible for maintaining and developing our short circuit analysis and fault studies software, while working closely with the other product team members. This position requires detailed knowledge of power systems analysis and power system protection, as well as broad experience with mathematical programming, software engineering, test plans, test implementation, and software delivery.

This is a remote position based in the U.S. that requires the ability to work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time. Candidates living in or open to relocating to the Ann Arbor MI area will receive preference.

You’ll make an impact as you:

  • Improve and maintain our short circuit analysis software framework.
  • Model power system equipment for short circuit analysis, including equipment that poses paradigm change and modernization of the power system network, such as penetration of inverter-coupled (wind/solar) generators, DC transmission lines, high-voltage electronic equipment, FACTS devices, etc., for use in the protection system simulation environment.
  • Extend and apply our unique link between the APA phasor-based protection system model and the time-domain environment of electromechanical transient stability analysis.
  • Develop programs and macros for customized protection studies and compliance with NERC and similar governing body standards.
  • Develop and implement detailed phasor-based models of protective devices, primarily modern digital relays.
  • Manage/guide/develop several exciting prospective applications of the APA protection system model in support of electric utility operations.
  • Help build automated tests to ensure the quality and maintainability of the source code.
  • Work closely with our software development team to follow programming best practices such as modern methodologies and tools including the Scaled Agile Framework, Jira, Confluence, and Git.

You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering with emphasis on Power Systems, with strong abilities in power systems software programming.
  • Proficiency in a programming language.
  • Detailed knowledge of power system analysis, power system network simulation techniques and algorithms.
  • Ability to travel up to 10%.

Preferred qualifications

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Power Systems.
  • Previous utility or consulting experience.
  • Previous software testing experience.
  • Knowledge of power system protection principles and applications.
  • Windows application development experience using Microsoft Visual Studio.
  • Python, C/C++, or Fortran proficiency.
  • Experience using CAPE or similar software.

You’ll benefit from:

  • Siemens offers a variety of health and wellness benefits to our employees. Details regarding our benefits can be found here:https://www.benefitsquickstart.com/siemens/index.html
