Job summary

Gainesville Regional Utilities seeks a Power Systems Coordinator II to oversee real-time operation, monitoring, and control of the Bulk Electric System to ensure safety, reliability, regulatory compliance, and economic dispatch.

The role requires EMS/SCADA experience, strong decision-making during emergencies, and knowledge of NERC standards. You will coordinate switching, outages, and mitigation strategies while maintaining situational awareness.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 6 years in electric generation, transmission, or energy operations; or
  • Associate degree or military electrical training with 7 years of operator experience; or
  • Completion of GRU’s internal Power Systems Coordinator progression program.

Responsibilities

  • Operate EMS, SCADA, and AGC systems to monitor and control generation, transmission, and interconnections.
  • Maintain situational awareness and perform real-time reliability assessments of the Bulk Electric System.
  • Develop mitigation strategies using contingency analysis, load flow studies, and security tools.
  • Coordinate switching, outages, clearances, and emergency procedures for generation and transmission assets.
  • Balance load and generation; monitor ramp rates, limits, reserves, fuel availability, and control status.

Job description

Career Opportunities: Power Systems Coordinator II (751)

Responsible technical position requiring independent judgment in the real-time operation, monitoring, and control of the Bulk Electric System to ensure safety, reliability, regulatory compliance, and economic dispatch. Position has authority to take timely real-time actions, including firm loadsheddingwhen necessary, to preserve system reliability.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in electric generation, transmission, or energy operations; OR
Associatedegree in an engineering-related discipline or military electrical training and seven (7) years of operator experience; OR
Completion of GRU’s internal Power Systems Coordinator progression-through-training program.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

NERC BITO-level certification or higher required; ongoing participation in annual training and Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) is mandatory.
Valid driver’s license may be required based on assignment.

Experience

Progressively responsible experience in real-time electric system operations, generation coordination, transmission operations, and energy balancing.

Extensive knowledge of Bulk Electric System operations, economic dispatch, and energy balancing.

Strong understanding of load forecasting, system modeling, fuel estimation, and real-time reliability coordination.

Proficiency with EMS/SCADA systems, security analysis, contingency analysis, and load flow tools.

Ability to independently assess conditions and act effectively during emergencies and high-pressure situations.

Strong communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.

Experience with outage coordination, switching operations, and system protection impacts.

Familiarity with Florida Transmission Management Systems (FTMS).
