Job summary

Paladin Consulting is seeking a Power Systems Controls Engineer in Aurora, OH. The role focuses on defining, developing, testing and implementing Microgrid and Power System Automation solutions, with emphasis on EPMS, PLCs, DCS, RTAC, IEDs and HMIs.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor's degree in engineering and 3–6 years of controls experience, plus familiarity with industry protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC-61850, OPC). Travel about 25% is expected for on-site engagements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution
  • 3-6 years of relevant controls experience
  • Working knowledge of automation functions such as Generator Synchronization, Automatic System Islanding, Load Shedding, Main-Tie-Main, Paralleling Switchgear, Operational Dispatch
  • Experience with Power Industry protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC-61850, OPC, BACnet) or equivalent
  • Travel expectations around 25% for customer meetings, site visits and field duties

Responsibilities

  • Define, develop, test and implement Microgrid, Power System Automation, and EPMS solutions using automation technologies from OEMs
  • Create Functional Specifications, including SOO and BOMs
  • Support Electrical Designers to develop project drawing packages
  • Develop, test and deploy PLC, DCS, RTAC, IED and HMIs for Power System Automation Applications
  • Develop Test Plans for FAT and SAT and support execution
  • Support loop checks, start-up and commissioning activities
  • Perform customer training as required
  • Troubleshoot existing systems that may be malfunctioning

Job Title: Power Systems Controls Engineer

Work Location: Aurora, OH

Education/Experience Required: Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution; 3-6 years of relevant controls experience

Job Description & Responsibilities:
  • As a Power Systems Controls Engineer, you will support the definition of, development, testing and implementation of Microgrid, Power System Automation, and EPMS (Electrical Power Monitoring System) solutions utilizing the latest automation technologies from industry leading OEMs.
  • Create and develop Functional Specifications, including SOO (Sequence of Operations) and BOMs (Bill of Materials).
  • Support Electrical Designers to develop project drawing packages.
  • Develop, test and deploy PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), DCS (Distributed Control Systems), RTAC (Real Time Automation Controller), IED (Intelligent Electronic Devices, Relays, Meters, Synchronizers, etc.) and HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces) for Power System Automation Applications.
  • Develop Test Plans for both FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) and support the execution of both tests.
  • Support loop checks, start-up and commissioning activities as required to successfully deploy Power System Automation and Microgrid solutions.
  • Perform formal and informal customer training as required.
  • Troubleshoot existing systems that may be malfunctioning.
Skills & Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution
  • 3-6 years of relevant controls experience
  • Working knowledge of the following automation functions or similar. (Generator Synchronization, Automatic System Islanding, Load Shedding, Main-Tie-Main, Paralleling Switchgear, Operational Dispatch)
  • Working experience with any of the following technology providers or equivalent. (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Basler, Woodward, AVEVA, Ignition, etc.)
  • Working experience with any of the communication protocols common in the Power Industry (Modbus, DNP3, IEC-61850, OPC, BACnet, etc.)
  • Travel expectations are 25% for customer meetings, site visits and field duties.
