Job summary

MISO is seeking a Power System Operations Engineer I to join the Real Time Operations group. You will train in EMS operations, monitor inputs from ICCP/SCADA into the State Estimator, and develop contingency analysis to support reliable, efficient energy delivery across the MISO footprint.

The role emphasizes learning operations processes, building relationships with operators and stakeholders, and contributing to future power system operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required.
  • Experience with utility or real-time operations preferred.
  • EMS experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency in programming with C, C++, VBA, Perl, Python.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to monitor EMS inputs and learn State Estimator operations.
  • Develop familiarity with the MISO footprint and EMS maintenance.
  • Collaborate with operators and stakeholders to learn operations processes.
  • Participate in projects shaping operations of the future.

Job description

As our Power System Operations Engineer I, you will be part of MISO's Real Time Operations group where the 'rubber meets the road.' Our operators and engineers work collaboratively to make complex and quick decisions. This team coordinates the use of the transmission system by ensuring flows stay within prescribed limits and partners with transmission operators and neighboring reliability coordinators to maintain reliability.

This position will be an Engineer in Reserve position where you will have the opportunity to train and hone your skills until you qualify and a shift position opens. You will also be responsible for learning how to maintain the accuracy and availability of one of the most important Energy Management Systems (EMS) in the Eastern Interconnection. You will train to be able to monitor inputs from ICCP, SCADA into the State Estimator. Your training will teach you how to obtain accurate contingency analysis study results. You will provide study results that assist in making MISO the most reliable, value-creating RTO. You will have the opportunity to participate in projects that lead the way for the operations of the future.

In one year as our Power System Operations Engineer I, you will know you were successful if you developed familiarity with the MISO footprint, built foundational expertise in maintaining the EMS and its inputs, can carry discussions about operations processes, and have established relationships with operators and external/internal stakeholders.

  • Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology
  • The ability and willingness to work a 12-hour rotating shift schedule

We would also prefer engineers with the following:

  • Experience in Utility, transmission operations, real-time operations, or a related field
  • Previous Energy Management System (EMS) experience
  • Transient/Voltage stability experience
  • Programming Experience in C, C++, VBA, Perl, Python

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.

The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 USD annually. Base salary range for this position is included in accordance with requirements of various state/local pay transparency legislation. Please note that salaries may vary for different individuals in the same role based on several factors, including but not limited to location of the role, individual competencies, education/professional certifications, and qualifications/experience. In addition to base salary, you will also receive 7.5% shift differential.

Position is also eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met. At MISO we offer a comprehensive benefits package, including 401k, vacation, sick and safe time, available on your first day of employment.
