Job summary

Siemens Mobility in Princeton, NJ, invites you to join its Autonomous Controls and Operations research group for a 3-6 month internship focused on power system modeling, control and optimization for AI datacenter applications.

You will develop and validate power system models using Matlab/Simulink, PSCAD, and OPAL-RT, perform EMT and dynamic studies, and contribute to industrial research in a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • Current or recent MS/PhD student in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Matlab/Simulink for power system modeling, simulation and control design.
  • Proficiency with PSCAD for EMT simulations of AC/DC power systems.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to industrial research projects on power system simulation and analysis for AI datacenter applications.
  • Develop, implement, and validate power system and power electronics models using Matlab/Simulink and PSCAD for steady-state and dynamic studies.
  • Develop models in OPAL-RT (ePhasorsim and eMegasim) and perform controller-hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Perform EMT and RMS simulations to support power system design and stability analysis.

Join our research group, Autonomous Controls and Operations, located in Princeton, NJ, for a 3-6 month internship, and contribute to the development of AI datacenter power systems simulation studies. Our close contact with different business units in Siemens provides the opportunity to contribute to and gain experience in real industrial applications. During this internship, you will experience the excitement and challenges of industrial research. Key Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to industrial research projects on power system simulation and analysis for AI datacenter applications
  • Develop, implement, and validate power systems and power electronics models usingMatlab/Simulink andPSCADfor steady-state and dynamic studies
  • Develop models in OPAL-RT (ePhasorsim and eMegasim) and perform controller-hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Perform electromagnetic transient (EMT) and RMS simulations to support power system design and stability analysis
Basic Qualifications:
  • A current or recently graduated MS or PhD student pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field
  • Strong hands‑on experience withMatlab/Simulinkfor power system modeling, simulation, and control design
  • Proficiency inPSCADfor electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations of AC/DC power systems
  • Experience withOPAL-RT for real‑time simulation
  • Foundational knowledge of power systems — including AC/DC circuit analysis, load flow concepts, power system stability, and basic generator operation principles
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Practical experience conducting power system studies such as load flow, short circuit, transient stability, and dynamic analysis using industry-standard tools
  • Experience with software development best practices: version control (Git), unit testing (pytest), and technical documentation
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a growing, dynamic, interdisciplinary team of experts across power engineering, software development, and data science

The pay range for this position is $33-47 per hour. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications and premium geographic location.
