Job Description

IHI Power Services Corp. (IPSC) has a career opportunity for a Power Plant Operator II (O&M Technician Operator) at our Cottage Grove, MN location. The Plant Operator assists in the safe and efficient operation of the power plant and the supporting equipment and systems. The Power Plant Operator carries out all routine water/gas chemistry analysis, inspects and monitors operating components and reports plant status.

The Power Plant Operator reports to the O&M Manager and periodically receives work direction from the CRO. The hourly rate range for this position is $37.12 - $45.34.

Job Summary

The Power Plant Operator operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision performing duties independently with only general direction given. The O&M Technician encounters recurring work situations of moderate complexity, with occasional variations from the norm. Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines.

The Plant Operator must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, in compliance with all environmental permits always. The O&M Technician must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance and provide suggestions for plant improvements and must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.

All employees are responsible to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer’s needs are met.

Job Functions

  • Assist in start-up, shut-down and normal operations of power plant systems.
  • Operate major auxiliary apparatus such as: air compressors; circulating water systems; boiler feedwater treatment system; wastewater systems; generator cooling system; boiler feedwater and condensate system; and locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Perform operating tests and inspections and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment assigned to achieve proper operating conditions.
  • Execute orders from the Control Room Operator at isolated panels for clearing equipment or making it ready for service in accordance with operating instructions and procedures; clear, tag, test, and safety tape these operations.
  • Perform routine water chemistry analysis and operate continuous Emissions Monitoring equipment.
  • Maintain logs as assigned.
  • Report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of the work and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions.
  • Assist maintenance personnel during maintenance periods.
  • Complete other tasks as required by the Control Room Operator or the Operations Manager.


Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in Power Plant Operations desirable.
  • Experience in water chemistry control, analysis of water conditions, water treatment facility operations and chemical handling requirements is required.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable.
  • Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls desirable. Extensive working knowledge of power plant industry desirable.
  • Must obtain a Minnesota Boiler Operator License. Must successfully complete a plant operator’s knowledge examination.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

  • Must possess basic math skills, good verbal communications skills, and be proficient with the use of power and precision tools.
  • Must be cooperative with those he/she contacts in this work and have the ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Must know the hazards involved and the safety precautions to be practiced in the operation and maintenance of power plant equipment and machinery.
  • Work within and insure strict adherence to all safety practices and procedures.
  • Must be able to respond to audio alarms and variations of sound.
  • Basic data entry/computer skills.
  • Work as a team - Must be able to pool our knowledge and energy to work in tandem to completely understand and productively respond to all of the business challenges.


Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • Requires working 12 hours shifts with weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions; "On call" status will periodically be required.
  • Includes working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Must be able to work on feet for extensive periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting 50 pounds.
  • All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a postoffer


physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

  • Must be able to work in elevated areas, confined spaces and in extreme heat and cold conditions.
  • Must be able to wear a full and half faced respirator
