Introduction
The Department of Health Services, Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI) and Central Wisconsin Center (CWC) are currently recruiting to fill a Power Plant Operator – In Charge.
MMHI and CWC are both located on the north side of Madison and offers a beautiful campus environment. MMHI is an inpatient psychiatric facility (with one outpatient program). MMHI is an integral part of the entire Wisconsin mental health service delivery system. Our overall service delivery goal is to provide specialized services in treatment, research, training, and consultation. CWC is one of three State operated Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF-IID) which provides residential care and active treatment to approximately 200 individuals.

This is a float position and works primarily day shift from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm on weekdays doing maintenance. This position is a shared weekend relief and operator in charge for vacation coverage. This may also be used as a secondary coverage if the primary and the relief shift operators are not available for shift coverage.
Position Summary
As the Power Plant Operator – In Charge, you will assume responsibility on a shift for the functioning of the Institute Power Plant which supplies steam, water, electricity, and chilled water for MMHI and CWC.
Salary Information
The starting pay is $29.28, plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probationary period is required.
Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. This position is in pay schedule and range 03/16.
Job Details
All applicants will be required to allow the DHS to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any convictions may be related to the job being filled.
All appointees will be required to receive a TB test, which will be administered by MMHI or medical personnel approved by the facility prior to their start date.
These positions will have physical requirements which may include but are not limited to lifting up to 50 lbs. repeatedly and climbing ladders. Applicants may be required to pass a physical evaluation to assess these requirements.
These positions require the ability to work in an environment that may include hot and humid temperatures, cold conditions and confined spaces.
DHS does not sponsor work visas for this position, thus, in compliance with federal law, selected candidates will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.
Qualifications
Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following:
- Ability to work holidays, evenings and weekends as needed.
- Experience operating boilers and related power plant equipment, such as pumps, chillers, air compressors, and other auxiliary equipment used to provide utility services.
- Experience with power plant safety practices and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
Well-qualified applicants will also have at least one of the following:
- Experience with water treatment practices or chilled water plant operations.
- Experience operating and maintaining steam and diesel-driven generators.
