Step 76 ($47.04/hour) - Step 99 ($61.49/hour)

Definition: Under general supervision, plans, directs, and reviews the work of a shift of mechanics engaged in maintaining, repairing, and modifying mechanical, electro/mechanical, and HVAC systems across District facilities. Provides staff training on work and safety procedures and performs related duties as assigned.

Class Characteristics: This role involves directing a shift of maintenance staff within a specific functional area. While responsible for assigning work and initial performance appraisal, major personnel decisions are made by a full supervisory staff.

Reports To: Section Manager of Power and Mechanical Maintenance

Current Assignment

The Power and Mechanical Maintenance Department is seeking a Power and Mechanical Foreworker to join our team. The selection process will identify the most qualified candidate, who will be offered the position based on qualifications as determined by the Foreworker Evaluation Committee.

The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in:

  • Mechanical and electro/mechanical systems maintenance and repair
  • HVAC systems installation and maintenance
  • Supervisory principles and work assignment
  • Electrical troubleshooting
  • Safety practices and procedures
  • Planning and reviewing work
  • Record keeping and report preparation
  • Reading diagrams and schematics
  • Effective communication and teamwork
  • Using MAXIMO maintenance software
  • Achieving department safety and performance metrics

Selection Process

This is a SEIU Local 1021 Bargaining unit position. The process includes screening applications, potential skills assessments, written exams, and panel interviews. External applicants are considered only after internal candidates have been evaluated.

Examples of Duties

Minimum Qualifications

Valid California driver’s license; willingness to work shifts and overtime; physical mobility for inspections; at least three years of journey-level experience in mechanical, electro/mechanical, and HVAC systems; trade school or apprenticeship training preferred.

Other requirements include a valid driver’s license and the ability to work shifts and inspect work physically.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of maintenance methods, tools, and safety practices for mechanical and electro/mechanical systems; supervisory skills; troubleshooting electrical and mechanical issues; reading schematics; and effective communication.
