Primary Purpose of Position: Work in this class involves the construction, maintenance, and repair of high‑voltage underground and overhead primary and secondary electric distribution lines. Install and maintain New River Light and Power’s fiber‑optic network.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of high school and six months of electrical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have knowledge of electric power distribution lines, National Electric Safety Code, electrical theory, system service rules and regulations and pertinent policies and practices.
  • Ability to safely work on energized and de‑energized lines.
  • Ability to lift more than 50 lbs., climb poles, work at heights and perform strenuous physical tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Must live or relocate to within approximately 20 minute commute of Boone within 90 days of hire.
  • CDL Class B will be required within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High school graduate.
  • Credentials from an Electrical Utility Lineman School Program and 4 to 5 years of electrical lineworker related work experience.
  • Lives within 20 minutes of Boone, NC.
  • Holds DoL Journeyman credentials.
  • Holds CDL Class B license.
Essential Job Functions
  • Responsible for working with live high voltage conductors, maintenance of electrical equipment, installation of underground power lines, and repair of overhead lines and poles.
  • Install and maintain NRLP’s fiber optic network cables.
  • Climbing, hand work, digging, heavy lifting, and all weather work is required.
  • Train and assist less experienced “B” line workers with proper repair of live high and low voltage lines.
  • Use powered equipment and safety techniques including climbing gear, bucket/digger trucks, excavators, high voltage gloves, and hoses.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities that involve the construction, maintenance, and repair of high‑voltage underground and overhead primary and secondary electric distribution lines.
  • Apply thorough knowledge of all applicable codes and methods of installation and repair; read and interpret schematics and recommend corrective actions.
  • Operate university owned vehicles with a valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrate journeyman level skills and knowledge, with ability to complete both physical and technical duties.
Work Schedule / Hours
  • Mon‑Fri, 7:00‑4:00 pm. Some call back and after hours required.
  • Position is mandatory during NRLP/University emergencies, closings, adverse weather conditions, and other department defined events. Will be part of after‑hours on‑call response rotation.
Physical Demands

Employee must be physically able to perform the duties of the job. Candidate will be asked to demonstrate physical and basic technical abilities as part of the interview and consideration process. A physical assessment and skills test will be administered to finalists who qualify.
