Job description

SUMMARY:

This is the second level of the Distribution Engineering Technologist classification. The purpose of this position is to provide an intermediate level of experienced technical expertise to evaluate complex options and design power distribution facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial projects in a safe, cost-effective, and reliable manner. Incumbents are expected to demonstrate an intermediate to high level of experience with customer design, workflow processes, procedures, and technical skills in the client's specific areas of expertise.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

With limited supervision, the incumbent is responsible for:

  1. Interpreting codes, standards, regulations, requirements, and guidelines; maintaining records and updating company/client systems.
  2. Applying policies and procedures to develop site designs for electrical distribution facilities.
  3. Creating safe, cost-effective designs for overhead or underground distribution projects, including commercial, industrial, high-profile, highway relocation, and other projects requiring high reliability.
  4. Preparing project packages with material lists, requisitions, site and construction drawings.
  5. Coordinating with construction personnel and clients to resolve design or customer issues.
  6. Creating work requests and communicating project details effectively with clients and end-users.
  7. Applying reliability principles to resolve power quality issues and ensure safe, cost-effective installations.
  8. Developing relationships with internal and external customers, supporting business goals professionally.
  9. Performing fieldwork to validate system requirements.
  10. Assisting in training employees and promoting safety policies.
  11. Performing other duties as assigned.

WORK COMPLEXITY:

Moderately routine with some decision-making involved.

OUTSIDE RELATIONSHIPS:

Influences decisions requiring tact and moderate influence.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.

  1. Attendance: Regular attendance required.
  2. Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Preferred: Associate's degree or higher in a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in utility power distribution engineering or craft.

Certifications: None required.

On-the-Job Training: Combination of shadowing, classroom training, and interaction with experienced employees during the first year.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to interpret manuals and procedures.
  • Effective report and correspondence writing.
  • Good presentation skills.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Basic operations, fractions, percentages, ratios, algebra, and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Interpreting instructions and solving problems involving variables.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with diverse individuals.
  • Self-motivated, reliable, team player, negotiator, time manager.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver's license and vehicle.
  • Ability to participate in storm restoration activities.

Physical Demands:

Includes standing, walking, sitting, talking, using hands, occasional climbing, stooping, reaching, and handling tools. Lifting up to 10 pounds frequently, with occasional lifting of heavier weights. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, and focus adjustments. Reasonable accommodations available.

Work Environment:

Includes occasional wet, high, or outdoor conditions, work near moving parts, electrical risks, and moderate noise levels. No exposure to hazardous chemicals or radiation expected.
