Job description

SUMMARY:

This is an entry-level position in the Engineering Technologist staff. The purpose of this position is to apply technical skills to evaluate options and design safe, cost-effective, and reliable facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial projects. Incumbents are expected to demonstrate a basic knowledge of client/customer design and workflow processes, data entry, and technical skills in the client’s specific areas of expertise.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the support of supervision and mentoring, the incumbent is responsible for:

  1. Learning, practicing, and promoting safety policies and procedures 100% of the time.
  2. Applying various codes, requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures to assigned work.
  3. Developing skills for safe job-site visits and interaction with construction personnel.
  4. Using design software and work management tools utilized by the company and clients.
  5. Preparing project and job packages, including material lists, requisitions, labor estimates, site and construction drawings.
  6. Evaluating loading on distribution equipment such as transformers and fuses.
  7. Learning utility construction practices on public rights of way (ROW) and private land.
  8. Communicating job status regularly to meet client expectations and deadlines.
  9. Building relationships with internal and external customers, supporting business goals professionally.
  10. Maintaining organized files and records.
  11. Mentoring under experienced personnel, supervision, management, and PE.
  12. Performing other duties as assigned by management.

WORK COMPLEXITY: Generally routine with established practices and procedures.

RELATIONSHIPS OUTSIDE WORKGROUP: Exchange of information requiring tact and diplomacy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associates degree (AA) or equivalent preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering science, math, or business preferred.

Note: Depending on client or contractual requirements, an Associate or Bachelor’s degree may be required.

  • 0-1 year experience in power distribution engineering, craft, or GIS/CAD work preferred.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

On-the-Job Training:

Combination of job shadowing, classroom training, and interaction with experienced employees during the first year.

  • Ability to read and interpret procedure manuals and operational procedures.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or the business community.
Mathematical Skills:
  • Basic operations with numbers, fractions, decimals, and units of measure.
  • Applying concepts like fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Basic algebra and geometry skills.

  • Applying common sense to carry out detailed instructions.
  • Handling standardized situations with minimal variables.

  • Participation in storm restoration activities if needed.
Physical Demands:

Physical activities include standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, using hands, climbing, stooping, reaching, and exerting weight up to 10 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustments. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.

Work Environment:

Includes occasional high places, outdoor conditions, and risk of electrical shock. Noise level is moderate. Accommodations can be made for individuals with disabilities.
