The Power Engineer II supports electrical distribution, transmission, substation, protection and control, field testing, power system studies, and utility asset-condition reviews under the direction of a Lead Engineer or Professional Engineer. This role is suited for a self-motivated electrical engineer who can manage assigned work, perform engineering evaluations, collaborate with project teams, communicate effectively with clients, and produce accurate and well-supported engineering deliverables.
Responsibilities
- Serve as project engineer for multiple design, study, and engineering-review assignments under the direction of a Lead Engineer.
- Prepare engineering designs and equipment specifications for electrical distribution projects ranging from 480 V through 34.5 kV.
- Perform and document engineering calculations, including short-circuit, grounding and step-and-touch potential, battery sizing, and equipment thermal-rating calculations.
- Conduct power system studies, including equipment evaluation, protective-device coordination, arc-flash, load-flow, harmonic, and power-quality analyses.
- Prepare one-line diagrams, general arrangements, sections, grounding plans, conduit and raceway plans, control schematics, wiring diagrams, material lists, and related design documents.
- Support protection and control design, including development and review of relay settings.
- Support maintenance testing and electrical equipment inspections; evaluate inspection records, equipment data, maintenance history, and test results; and perform engineering and utility asset-condition assessments.
- Create and revise designs using AutoCAD or MicroStation.
- Develop scopes of work, conceptual designs, execution plans, equipment specifications, bid evaluations, and purchase recommendations.
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, vendors, utilities, and internal engineering disciplines to support integrated project delivery and independent engineering reviews.
- Support substation construction, startup, and equipment commissioning activities; identify gaps or inconsistencies in available technical information; and prepare clear calculations, information requests, reports, presentations, technical correspondence, and project documentation.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- At least one year of progressive experience in electrical distribution design, power system studies, substation design, utility engineering, equipment assessment, or a closely related area.
