Job description

Job Title: Power Electronics Test & Reliability Engineer

Duration: Long term

Client: unico

Job Description:
  • This role focuses on validating, testing, and ensuring the reliability of next-generation power electronics systems used in renewable energy, energy storage, EV charging, and industrial power conversion applications. The engineer will lead product verification and validation activities across the full development lifecycle, with a strong emphasis on high-voltage power converter testing, reliability engineering, EMC compliance, root cause analysis, and design verification of SiC and GaN-based power electronics. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with design, manufacturing, quality, and regulatory teams to deliver robust, safe, and production-ready products.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute verification and validation plans for high-power DC-DC converters, AC-DC inverters, and energy conversion systems.
  • Design and perform electrical, thermal, environmental, and reliability testing of power electronics products throughout development and product qualification.
  • Conduct power converter characterization and performance testing, including efficiency, thermal performance, transient response, protection functions, and fault tolerance.
  • Develop automated test systems, test procedures, and validation methodologies to improve test coverage and product quality.
  • Perform failure analysis, root cause investigations, and corrective action implementation using structured methodologies such as 8D, 5-Why, Six Sigma, and DFMEA.
  • Lead reliability qualification activities including HALT, HASS, life testing, accelerated stress testing, thermal cycling, vibration, and environmental testing.
  • Support EMC/EMI compliance testing, troubleshooting, and mitigation activities for UL, CE, IEC, and industry-specific standards.
  • Evaluate and validate power semiconductor devices, magnetics, sensing circuits, protection circuitry, and thermal management solutions.
  • Collaborate with power electronics design engineers to identify design weaknesses, validate design margins, and improve product robustness.
  • Develop test fixtures, instrumentation setups, and data acquisition systems for high-voltage and high-power laboratory testing.
  • Analyze test data and provide detailed reports with recommendations for design improvements and reliability enhancements.
  • Work closely with manufacturing and quality teams to support production testing, yield improvement initiatives, and field failure investigations.
  • Support safety certifications and regulatory compliance activities, including UL, CE, IEC, and EMC requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures for high-voltage and high-power systems.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on product reliability, manufacturability, and long-term field performance.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience in power electronics testing, validation, reliability, or design.
  • Strong understanding of DC-DC converters, AC-DC converters, inverters, and power conversion topologies.
  • Hands-on experience operating oscilloscopes, power analyzers, electronic loads, environmental chambers, thermal cameras, and high-voltage test equipment.
  • Experience developing and executing verification, validation, and reliability test plans.
  • Knowledge of failure analysis, reliability engineering, and root cause methodologies.
  • Understanding of EMC/EMI testing and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Experience analyzing thermal, electrical, and reliability performance of power electronics systems.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB, Simulink, and power electronics simulation tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and technical reporting skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Power Electronics or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in power electronics validation, reliability, or product qualification.
  • Experience testing SiC and GaN-based power conversion products.
  • Knowledge of HALT, HASS, accelerated life testing, MTBF analysis, DFMEA, PFMEA, and reliability prediction methodologies.
  • Experience qualifying products for UL1741, IEC 62109, CE, and related regulatory standards.
  • Background in EV charging, solar inverters, energy storage systems, or industrial power supplies.
  • Experience with automated test development using LabVIEW, Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with high-power systems (2kW+), battery systems, and high-voltage platforms (400V-900V).
