Job summary

ABB is seeking a Department Manager of Power Electronics in Raleigh, NC. The role leads technology and system development for power electronics, guides proposals, and collaborates with an R&D team to deliver innovative solutions.

Candidates should have a PhD or MS in Electrical Engineering with a Power Electronics focus and 2+ years of relevant experience, hands-on lab skills, and firmware experience (DSPs/MCUs/FPGA). Travel up to 15% is expected.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with Power Electronics or MS with Power Electronics focus and 2+ years of experience.
  • Hands-on experience building electrical circuits; soldering and re-work of PCBs; ability to use oscilloscopes and lab meters.
  • Firmware for DSPs/MCUs/FPGAs (C, C++, Verilog, VHDL) and PCB design using Altium or Cadence.
  • Power electronics integration design including CAD tools and thermal FEA simulations.
  • Travel up to 15% is required.

Responsibilities

  • Scouting new technologies, creating proposals, and obtaining sponsor buy-in.
  • Assessing technologies for power supplies, grid-connected converters, UPS, EV chargers, and motor drives.
  • Developing technical requirements and creating new designs and PCBs.
  • Develop firmware for low- and high-level functions of power converters and build/test models and hardware demonstrators.
  • Select components and engage suppliers; build test assemblies and record data.
  • Analyze data, optimize solutions, and prepare technical reports and publications.
  • Represent ABB at conferences and events and contribute to strategic planning.

Department Manager of Power Electronics

Contributes to ABB's success with technology, software, product, and/or system development. Identifies and implements innovative solutions to relevant problems. Provides ideas and is able to work both independently and as a part of a Research & Development (R&D) team.

Responsibilities
  • Scouting new technologies, creating proposals, and getting buy-in from sponsors.
  • Assessing new technologies for a variety of applications (power supplies, grid-connected converters, UPS, EV chargers, motor drives, and more).
  • Developing technical requirements and creating new designs and designing electronic circuits and printed circuit boards.
  • Develop firmware for low- and high-level functions of power converters and building and testing simulation models and hardware demonstrators.
  • Selecting components and engaging suppliers.
  • Building test assemblies, running experiments, and recording test data.
  • Analyzing test data and optimizing the solutions.
  • Preparing internal and external technical reports, presentations, and publications.
  • Writing invention disclosures and providing technical inputs for patent filings.
  • Representing ABB in professional conferences and other events.
  • Contributing to strategic planning activities.

The work model for the role is Onsite in Raleigh, NC.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in the field of Power Electronics, OR a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with a Power Electronics focus, and a minimum of 2 years’ experience required.
  • Hands-on experience with building electrical circuits and ability to solder and re-work printed circuit boards; Ability to use oscilloscopes, probes, meters, and other basic lab equipment.
  • Experience with writing firmware code for DSPs, MCUs, and FPGAs (C, C++, Verilog, VHDL), and experience with PCB design, especially using Altium or Cadence software.
  • Experience with power electronics integration design, including CAD software and FEA thermal simulations software.
  • Previous experience with writing proposals and securing funding for research.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% travel.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
