Job summary

Stored Energy Systems (SENS) in Longmont, CO, is seeking a Power Electronics Engineer IV to design and develop industrial battery chargers, inverters, and related accessories across a wide power range from concept to production. This role requires deep expertise in power conversion and embedded control systems and entails collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of power conversion experience with a bachelor’s degree in EE or 6+ years with a master’s.
  • Experience designing power conversion systems, including active front-end designs for single and three-phase inputs.
  • Knowledge of isolation requirements and UL/IEC standards.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC design, filtering, and troubleshooting.
  • Deep knowledge of MOSFETs, SiC, GaN, gate drivers, and protection circuits.
  • Proficiency in LTspice and analog/power circuit simulation.
  • Strong foundation in control theory, modeling, and stability analysis.
  • Experience with thermal design and analysis.
  • Knowledge of magnetics design (transformers/inductors).
  • Experience with isolated and non-isolated bidirectional topologies (DAB preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with lab instrumentation.
  • Proven success bringing products from concept through volume production.
  • Strong collaboration and communication across teams.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly skilled Power Electronics Engineer IV to design and develop industrial battery chargers, inverters, and related accessories across a wide power range (150W to 100kW) for critical power applications. This role spans the full product lifecycle from concept development and design through production launch and ongoing support and requires deep technical expertise in power conversion and embedded control systems.

Responsibilities
  • Design, analyze, simulate, prototype, and validate power conversion systems and topologies.
  • Develop and implement both analog and digital control loops.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including product specifications, schematics, and interface control documents.
  • Conduct design reviews and collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams.
  • Support product transition to manufacturing, including design for manufacturability and test readiness.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in production and field environments.
  • Mentor and support the development of team members, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with 8+ years of power conversion experience OR a master’s degree with a focus in power electronics and 6+ years of power conversion experience.
  • Proven experience designing power conversion systems, including active front-end designs for single and three-phase AC inputs.
  • Strong understanding of isolation requirements, including creepage and clearance standards (UL, IEC).
  • Experience with EMI/EMC design, compliance, filtering, and troubleshooting.
  • Deep knowledge of power semiconductor devices (MOSFETs, SiC, GaN), gate drivers, and protection circuits.
  • Proficiency in analog and power circuit simulation tools (e.g. LTspice).
  • Strong foundation in control theory, including design, modeling, and stability analysis of control loops.
  • Experience with thermal design and analysis (heatsinking, airflow, and loss modeling).
  • Knowledge of magnetics design, including transformers and inductors (core selection, winding techniques).
  • Experience with isolated and non-isolated bidirectional topologies (DAB experience strongly preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, network analyzers).
  • Demonstrated success bringing products from concept through volume production.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing and certifying grid-tied systems to UL 1741.
  • Knowledge of phase-locked loops (PLL) for grid synchronization.
  • Experience with large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), UPS systems, and battery charging applications.
  • Advanced programming skills in embedded C/C++.
Location: This position is located in Longmont, CO with flexibility to work a hybrid schedule once fully trained. Base Compensation: $170,000 - $200,000 is the projected range of annual base salary for this role depending on the candidate’s overall qualifications and experience. Bonus: This position is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance.
