Job summary

HKA Enterprises is seeking a Power Distribution Designer/Engineer in the United States to support electrical utility distribution design projects. The role requires 1-3 years of hands-on distribution design experience and a solid understanding of utility distribution systems.

An EIT is preferred but not required. The designer will work with engineers, project managers, utilities, and field personnel to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective distribution designs, while adhering to standards

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field.

Responsibilities

• Design overhead and underground electrical power distribution systems.
• Prepare design plans, construction drawings, and supporting documentation.
• Perform electrical calculations and assist with system planning and equipment selection.
• Specify poles, transformers, conductors, switches, fuses, and other distribution equipment.
• Review existing infrastructure and develop design solutions based on field conditions.
• Prepare material lists, construction packages, and cost estimates.
• Coordinate with utility clients, engineers, field crews, and project stakeholders.
• Assist with distribution system upgrades, relocations, maintenance, and new construction.
• Conduct quality-control reviews of design packages and engineering documentation.
• Use engineering software to develop accurate distribution designs.
• Ensure designs comply with utility standards and NESC requirements.

Job description

The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of hands‑on electrical power distribution design experience and a strong understanding of utility distribution systems. This position will work closely with engineers, project managers, utilities, and field personnel to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective distribution designs. An EIT certification is preferred, but not required.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer overhead and underground electrical power distribution systems
• Develop distribution design plans, construction drawings, and supporting documentation
• Perform electrical calculations and assist with system planning and equipment selection
• Design and specify poles, transformers, conductors, switches, fuses, and other distribution equipment
• Review existing utility infrastructure and develop design solutions based on field conditions
• Prepare material lists, construction packages, work orders, and cost estimates
• Interpret utility standards, engineering specifications, maps, and construction requirements
• Coordinate with utility clients, engineers, field crews, and other project stakeholders
• Assist with distribution system upgrades, relocations, maintenance, and new construction
• Conduct quality‑control reviews of design packages and engineering documentation
• Utilize engineering and utility design software to develop accurate distribution designs
• Ensure designs comply with applicable utility standards, NESC requirements, and engineering practices
• Support multiple projects while meeting established schedules and deadlines

Required Qualifications

• 1-3 years of electrical power distribution design or engineering experience
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field
• Working knowledge of electrical power distribution systems
• Understanding of overhead and/or underground utility distribution design
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, maps, and utility standards
• Strong computer skills and ability to learn utility‑specific design software
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently while collaborating with a project team

Preferred Qualifications

• Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification
• Experience designing for an electric utility, engineering consulting firm, or EPC contractor
• Experience with utility distribution design software such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, PoleForeman, BOUD, DDS, or similar platforms
• Experience with Duke Energy, Dominion Energy, FirstEnergy, AEP, Entergy, CenterPoint Energy, or other electric utility standards
• Knowledge of NESC standards and utility construction practices
• Experience with pole loading, conductor sizing, transformer sizing, voltage drop, and distribution system design
• Field experience or exposure to utility construction and distribution operations
