Position Overview

Title: Power Cable Maintainer
Type: Civil service position
Selected candidates must pass a civil service exam and be appointed from the resulting list to gain permanent status.
Incumbents who are currently employed in the title of Transit Electrical Helper working in Electrical Power Maintenance for at least one year are eligible for provisional promotion.

Compensation

Salary Range: Minimum $38.17 per hour for a 40‑hour work week, increasing to $44.90 per hour in the sixth year of service. Rates are subject to change.
Benefits include night and weekend salary differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, a comprehensive medical plan, and a pension plan.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, install, inspect, test, alter, and repair power feeder cable systems and communication cable systems, both aerial and underground, between generating plants, substations, and circuit breaker houses.
• Maintain power cable systems between the Main Distribution Frame Room and Telephone Terminal Boxes throughout the system, including low‑voltage control cables, manholes, duct lines, and related appurtenances.
• Splice single‑ and three‑conductor lead‑covered cables, multi‑conductor control and communication cables, and replace faulty sections.
• Conduct tests for faults, handle asbestos‑containing materials, and remove waste matter from manholes and cableways to access cables.
• Drive motor vehicles, prepare reports, and perform related duties.
• Perform physical activities such as working outdoors in all weather conditions, climbing and descending ladders through manholes, working in confined spaces, climbing onto train tracks, stepping over rails, operating in dimly lit areas, differentiating signal colors, and wearing respirators as necessary.
• Work various shifts, including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

How to Qualify

1. Internal Candidates: Must be permanently employed as a Transit Electrical Helper in Electrical Power Maintenance and not otherwise ineligible.
2. External Candidates and Eligible MTA Employees:
   • Completion of a four‑year full‑time apprenticeship (electrical line worker, telecommunications line worker, or industrial electrician) recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor, or a State apprenticeship council recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor.
   • Four years of full‑time journey‑level experience as an electrical line worker, telecommunications line worker, or industrial electrician installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing high‑voltage cables and related equipment.
   • Three years of full‑time journey‑level experience in the work described above, plus one of the following: two years of satisfactory experience as an electrician, electrician’s helper, apprentice, or trainee; graduation from a trade, technical, vocational high school, or accredited college/university with relevant coursework totaling 600 hours or an associate’s degree or higher.
3. Part‑time experience may be credited on a prorated basis.
4. Experience in low‑voltage residential or commercial electrical work, single‑conductor communications wiring, or similar will not qualify.
