Job Description Summary

Duties assigned to this title will require an in-depth knowledge and practice of Transportation Studies, with a preference for engineering experiences on transportation design, planning, and operational projects. The duties will require publication experience, independent discretion, and judgment in conducting research project activities, developing research methods, and mentoring students. The Postmaster Research Associate – Transportation supports research initiatives within the transportation program by contributing to data collection, analysis, and project coordination. This position is designed for individuals who have completed a master’s degree and are seeking advanced research experience in transportation systems, policy, and planning. The role supports faculty‑led and grant‑funded projects while ensuring compliance with institutional and sponsor requirements. This is a grant‑funded position.

Essential Duties
  • Brainstorm research concepts, secure external funding, design transportation test plans, develop transportation computational models, and interpret research results in sustainable transportation studies.
  • Contribute to the work of experimentalists and other computational researchers in the group. Contribute to the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and management of transportation‑related research projects.
  • Conduct data collection, analysis, and interpretation using appropriate analytical tools and methodologies.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports, research papers, and grant proposals.
  • Perform literature reviews and synthesize findings to support ongoing research efforts.
  • Coordinate project activities, timelines, and deliverables in collaboration with faculty and research staff.
  • Maintain accurate research documentation and ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Present research findings at meetings, conferences, and workshops as needed.
  • Utilize transportation modeling tools, GIS software, and statistical analysis programs as required.
Education

Master of Science degree in transportation planning, engineering, civil engineering with a concentration on transportation, or other relevant majors.

Required Licensing/Certification

Engineer in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) license(s).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Transportation planning and design.

  • Multitasking and time management.
  • Both verbal and written communications in English.

Ability to:

  • Commonly used transportation software packages.
Work Experience

Preferred:

  • Expertise in transportation design, planning, and operation.
  • Experience with roadway design, traffic, and transportation software applications.

Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system.

Working/Environmental Conditions
  • Work is performed in a routine office environment without exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions.
  • Limited to sitting and/or standing.
  • Stoop, bend, or lift.
  • Handling of lightweight objects.
