Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as an Advanced Pharmacy Technician in the Outpatient Mail Order Pharmacy Call Center. As an Advanced Pharmacy Technician, you will support a team dedicated to enhancing lives and leading in pharmaceutical care. This department ensures safe, accurate, and timely medication distribution for diverse patient populations.

The role involves performing operational dispensing duties, including handling controlled substances, investigational drugs, and pharmacy purchasing, all in compliance with departmental policies to provide optimal pharmaceutical care at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics.

Essential Job Functions
  • Ensure safe, accurate, and timely pharmaceutical care and medication delivery, identifying customer requirements needing pharmacist or management attention.
  • Assist other pharmacy technicians and train new employees, mentoring as needed. Support pharmacists in entering physician orders into the system.
  • Prepare and deliver investigational drugs, controlled substances, and drugs used in the OR, maintaining Omnicell medication stock.
  • Maintain controlled substance inventories, restock controlled substances, and manage outdated medications under supervision.
  • Support pharmacy operations and distributive systems to deliver optimal patient care.
  • Lead processes related to pharmacy distributive systems and operational projects.
  • Maintain equipment, technology, and automation systems, reviewing their performance for accuracy and reliability.
  • Implement downtime procedures and communicate with vendors when necessary.
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency and cost-effective improvements in pharmacy operations.
  • Prepare inventories, order drugs and supplies, check received drugs against invoices, and maintain purchase data.
  • Prepare IV additives using robotic systems.
  • Answer phone calls courteously, triage communications, perform nursing unit inspections, and collect quality assurance data. Perform other duties within legal scope as assigned.
  • Perform additional technician duties as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED); higher degrees preferred.
  • Valid Illinois pharmacy technician license and national certification.
  • At least 5 years' inpatient hospital pharmacy technician experience, or graduation from an ASHP-accredited program with 2+ years' experience, or at least 1 year at UCMC with above-average evaluations.
  • Knowledge of hospital pharmacy practices, medications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Computer skills with typing at least 35 WPM.
  • Excellent communication, attention to detail, mathematical skills, and ability to oversee others.
  • Experience with sterile compounding and cleaning preferred.
Position Details
  • Full-Time (1.0 FTE), Day shift 9:00 am – 5:30 pm.
  • Location: Burr Ridge, IL.
  • Department: Pharmacy Call Center.
  • Work primarily at Burr Ridge Campus, Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work.
