J&J IM is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar specialized in Oligonucleotide chemistry to join our fast-paced Cell and Genetic Medicine Team in San Diego, California.

Purpose:

The Postdoctoral Scholar, Oligochemistry will work cross-functionally in the Therapeutics Discovery organization to broaden the use of RNAi into extrahepatic tissues. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, synthesis, purification and characterization of chemically modified, therapeutic oligonucleotides. The postdoctoral scholar will collaborate with assay development and biology teams within the RNA therapeutics and delivery group in La Jolla and employ molecular modeling and high resolution imaging approaches within the global J&J organization.

You will be responsible for:

• Drive innovation in oligonucleotide chemistry includes design, solid phase synthesis, and characterization of novel oligonucleotide structures to improve potency and durability
• Expert in operating instruments and equipment including MerMade, Dr. Oligo, AKTA pure, HPLC, LC-MS, and UV/Vis
• Independently problem-solve in the laboratory setting to overcome synthetic challenges as well as adapt and improve upon existing workflows
• Partner with cross-functional teams within the global J&J organization
• Review and stay current on scientific literature and apply novel solutions and strategies to establish novel chemical modification schemes balancing bioavailability, delivery, tolerability and potency.

Education and Experience:

• Required Minimum Education: PhD
• PhD in organic chemistry or related scientific discipline
• Preferred Areas of Study-oligonucleotide chemistry and analytics/oligonucleotide biology with focus in siRNA
• Required Years of Related Experience: 0-1
• Hands-on experience in ASO and/or siRNA chemistry, including synthesis, modification, and conjugation
• Strong background in analytical characterization of chemically modified oligonucleotides (eg. HPLC, LC-MS, etc.)

Preferred Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

• Have unique insights into phosphoramidite monomers, raw materials, and oligonucleotide synthesis reactions related to siRNA
• A proven track record of success as judged by publications and patents with oligochemistry focus
• Expertise in structure-function studies and molecular modeling is preferable
• Experience and understanding of delivery and tolerability challenges of siRNA is desirable.
• Hands-on experience to run in vitro activity and durability screens are a plus.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :

$77,000-$124,200

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
