Job description

Position Description

The Quantum Algorithmic Science & Engineering (QASE) Lab at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications for postdoctoral appointments in the theory of quantum computation and quantum information science. The initial term of appointment is two years, with the possibility to extend upon mutual agreement. Appointments are expected to begin in 2027, with negotiable start date.

Successful candidates will work in the QASE Lab, led by Prof. Leo Zhou, and will have the opportunity to engage with quantum faculty across UCLA in all areas of quantum science and engineering (see https://www.cqse.ucla.edu/people.html). The position is theory-focused but can also collaborate with experiments. Possible research topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Quantum algorithms

  • Application of high-dimensional probability and learning theory to quantum systems and algorithm design

  • Quantum complexity theory and many-body physics

  • Engineering fault-tolerant quantum applications in sensing, simulation, and computation

  • Application of quantum information to physics, chemistry, and materials science

Application Process

The candidate should submit the following materials via AJO:

  • Cover letter

  • Curriculum vitae, including a list of publications

  • Research statement (maximum 2 pages) -- should discuss past accomplishments in context and future goals

  • Three reference letters

To be eligible, the candidate must have (or should expect to receive by their start date) a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field. The candidate should have a strong track record of research excellence, as demonstrated by publications in top-tier journals or conferences.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. For full consideration, please submit your application by November15,2025.

Additional Information

UCLA is home to several institutes and centers that support research in quantum science. This includes the Center for Quantum Science and Engineering (CQSE), established in 2018 to coordinate research and teaching activities. Two of the eight NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institutes (FTQSAA and CIQC) are partly centered at UCLA. The California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) provides advanced nan technology infrastructure and expertise for research in quantum materials and quantum optics. The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at UCLA, one of the six NSF math institutes, has also sponsored programs in quantum computing research. Furthermore, UCLA has recently invested $500M in a new 700,000-square-foot UCLA Research Park, which will partly house a new Quantum Innovation Hub. The new hub will bring together faculty members and researchers from UCLA and other institutions, government and industry partners, leading startups, and students in a collective, multidisciplinary effort to advance the state of quantum science and technology.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.
