Job description

The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Virginia is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Center for Advanced Vision Science, under the supervision of Dr. Gelfand.

The candidate must be a strong communicator who works well in a team setting. A solid command of both written and spoken English is essential. The ideal candidate will bring significant cell and molecular biology experience, along with basic science knowledge using advanced techniques in one or more of the following areas:

  • Ophthalmology/vision science
  • Biochemistry
  • Protein isolation and characterization
  • Immunoblotting
  • Confocal microscopy
  • RNA isolation and characterization
  • Quantitative PCR (qPCR)
  • In vivo imaging
  • Cell culture and transfection
  • Statistical analysis


The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Perform laboratory experiments using advanced molecular and cellular biology techniques
  • Contribute to experimental design and statistical analysis
  • Assist with manuscript and grant writing, and respond to reviewer feedback
  • Deliver oral and poster presentations at scientific meetings
  • Participate in lab meetings, presentations, and collaborative discussions
  • Mentor junior team members when applicable

Minimum Requirements:

Doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or M.D.)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in one or more of the listed techniques
  • Prior experience in vision science or ophthalmology-related research
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Experience with scientific writing and presentations


This position is offered as a 12-month appointment, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. This role is designed as a training opportunity in preparation for a full-time academic or research career. Postdoctoral Research Associates work under the supervision of a senior scholar, focusing on full-time research or scholarship, with the freedom to publish their findings.

Compensation:

Determined based on educational background and experience, in accordance with NIH guidelines.

Physical Demands :

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
