Position Overview

A postdoctoral research associate (or postdoctoral fellow) position is available in the Pelvic Health, Exercise, and Musculoskeletal ( PHEM ) Laboratory, directed by Rita Deering, PT, DPT, PhD, in the Department of Physical Therapy. Our lab focuses on various aspects of perinatal and female athlete health, including pelvic floor function, exercise response/adaptations, physical activity, musculoskeletal function (strength, fatigability, perinatal adaptations, etc), pain, physiology (including Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport), and biomechanics. Current studies utilize electromyography (EMG), dynamometry, musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging, body composition assessments, internal pelvic floor muscle examination, inertial measurement units, accelerometry, and exercise interventions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Lead and conduct scientific research assessing exercise responses and adaptations in perinatal females and female athletes (both pre-conception and throughout the perinatal period). Studies may include motion capture, dynamometry, EMG, metabolic data (e.g., VO2, muscle oxygenation, etc), assessment of vital signs, ultrasound imaging, strength and fatigability testing, neuromuscular electrophysiology, and pelvic floor muscle examination. Experience in data management, statistical analysis, and scientific writing is required. Participation in both independent research as well as working on a research team is expected.

The successful candidate will be expected to publish scholarly papers, assist with grant writing, as well as mentor undergraduate and graduate students in the lab.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The competitive applicant will be a highly motivated scientist with a history of research productivity (peer‑reviewed publications and presentations), experience working with human study participants, a PhD in rehabilitation science, kinesiology, exercise science/physiology, human movement, physiology, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, or a related field.

Successful candidates will also be expected to: work independently, effectively communicate in both written reports and oral presentations, work well in a team setting, ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures, and possess attention to detail. Proficiency in using Word, Excel, PowerPoint are necessary. Fluency in the English language is essential along with strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Exceptional candidates will possess history of funding or desire to pursue extramural funding (e.g., NIH fellowship awards, etc).

Previous experience with women’s health preferred.

Experience with measurement and analysis of strength, torque, electromyography, dynamometry, and/or motion capture of human gait is preferred. Some background in muscle physiology and cardiovascular function is welcome.
