The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF) seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases and Host Defense at USUHS in Bethesda, Maryland.

The role focuses on respiratory mucosal immunity against RSV, influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and other pathogens, using animal models and human model systems with flow cytometry and sequencing. You will design and perform experiments, maintain records, contribute to grants, and present findings.

Qualifications

  • PhD in immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or related field.
  • Minimum 0–5 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and design original laboratory research projects aligned with the laboratory mission.
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
  • Formulate hypotheses and design experimental protocols.
  • Plan, conduct and complete investigations under supervision.

HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to support the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases and Host Defense in the Department of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland.

Dr. Malloy heads the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases and Host Defense and her research focuses on respiratory mucosal immunity against RSV, influenza and SARS-CoV-2, as well as, emerging respiratory viral pathogens. Dr. Malloy's research applies small animal models and human model systems using innovated flow cytometric and sequencing technologies to define functional and genetic markers of immune protection. The goal of the research is to develop next generation immunoprophylactic approaches to respiratory viral prevention.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine.   • Performs and designs original laboratory research projects consistent with the laboratory mission, including collection and organization of data. Makes detailed observations about experiments.
  • Prepares technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
  • Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
  • Plans, conducts and completes investigations under the supervision of the head of the laboratory.
  • Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
  • Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases.
  • Participates in meetings regarding experimental design and development.
  • Presents scientific findings in oral and written format; writes technical reports and scientific papers for peer reviewed journals.
  • Assists the principal investigator to prepare grants/contracts and proposals.
  • Will handle research animals (mice) and run various experiments.
  • Assists the principal investigator to provide experimental and technical supervision of one or more technician, graduate student and/or clinical fellows.
  • Maintains supplies in the laboratory and keeps the laboratory area clean.
  • Ensures systems are in place for efficient planning of lab supplies, records and document management as well as experimental protocols and data, and coordination of good lab practices and lab safety.

Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree in immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 0-5 years experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Independent thinking and problem-solving skills are critical.
  • Preference will be given to researchers with experience in innate and adaptive immune response analyses, the study of infectious diseases, and analysis of single cell sequencing data.
  • Experience and understanding of immunologic methods such as cell culture of primary immune cells, PCR, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry is beneficial.
  • A strong understanding of antigen presenting cells and T cell biology.
  • Prior experience working with animal models (mice) in a lab setting is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate scientific findings in written and oral format
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust background check.
Physical Capabilities
  • Requires standing and sitting for lab bench experiments; handling of research animals, handling various chemicals.
Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
  • Will require working on evenings and weekends as experimental protocols require.
  • Will involve working with biohazardous materials and laboratory animals.
Compensation
  • The annual salary pay range for this position is $52,800 - $68,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
