Join the HJF Team!

HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team. The fellow will pursue research along a focused line of inquiry and have a manuscript in development.

This position supports the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics. The Petrus Lab at the Uniformed Services University studies the brain’s adaptation to amputation using a mouse model of whisker denervation. The research aims to identify the cells and mechanisms involved in beneficial recovery versus chronic pain, employing techniques like single nucleus RNA sequencing, histology, electrophysiology, and behavior analysis. The lab is highly collaborative, with connections to NIH, and encourages learning and independent thinking.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine, supporting scientific programs that benefit military and civilian populations. Since 1983, HJF has been a key link between the military medical community and its partners.

Note: Due to security clearance requirements, non-US citizens must have been in the US for 3 of the past 5 years.

Responsibilities
  1. Assist in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research.
  2. Investigate the feasibility of applying scientific principles to inventions and products.
  3. Perform specialized laboratory research with experimental protocols.
  4. Handle samples and maintain detailed records.
  5. Prepare data for presentations and publications.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned, including training and participation in required activities.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree in Neuroscience or Physiology.
  • 0-5 years of experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience with patch clamp electrophysiology and optogenetics is highly desired.
  • Mentoring or team experience preferred.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret scientific data.
  • Capability to obtain/maintain a T1 Public Trust clearance with CAC.
Physical Capabilities
  • Lift materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Stand or sit for prolonged periods.
  • No allergies to mice and rats, or allergies are under control.
Work Environment
  • Primarily laboratory setting.
Compensation
  • Salary range: $50,100 - $67,000, based on experience and education.

Employment is contingent upon successful background check, including references, employment verification, education, criminal record, and possibly DMV check. Qualifications as equivalents require prior approval.
