Position Summary

The department of Public Health Education, under the direction of Dr. Mateus Gouveia has an immediate need for a Postdoctoral Fellow. The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to advancing the use of fine-scale genetic diversity (e.g., locus-specific ancestry) to facilitate the inclusion of ancestrally diverse populations in association studies, including Genome-Wide Association Studies ( GWAS ).
The Postdoctoral Fellow will have the opportunity to:

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of wet and dry-lab biomedical scientists at MSM and an extensive network of international collaborators in the US, Brazil, and African countries.
  • Gain hands-on experience in study design, data analysis, coding, and manuscript preparation.
  • Participate in specialized training, present research findings at scientific meetings, and publish in high-impact journals.
  • Develop skills to launch a successful career in academia or industry.

Dr. Gouveia’s lab promotes an integrative approach to Population Genetics and Genetic Epidemiology. Postdoctoral Fellows will work collaboratively, combining their respective expertise to tackle the Lab’s research goals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with Population Genetics, Evolutionary Biology, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Biology, Computer Science, or a related field with substantial genomics training.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

  • Performs a variety of routine and non-routine analysis of large genomic datasets. Records and validates results for accuracy and completeness.
  • Develop and/or apply bioinformatic tools to process, analyze and interpret high throughput genomic data sets.
  • Apply biological and statistical knowledge to draw rigorous, actionable conclusions from complex data sets.
  • Communicate findings internally and externally.
  • Troubleshoots procedures if analysis results are unexpected or unsatisfactory. Recommends alternative procedures.
  • Responsible for accurately recording work performed including results and methodology. Calculates, compiles and analyzes data obtained from work performed.
  • Independently evaluates research data and initiates alternative approaches to improve the quality of results by providing input to overall research design.
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics and is essential
  • Familiarity with public bioinformatics databases and resources.
  • Contributes to preparation of manuscripts and grant submissions.
  • Travels to meetings to represent the lab and to present new data.
