Job Description

The Makino Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate at the Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology in Jupiter, Florida. The area of our research focuses on coronary microvascular dysfunction in diabetes and menopause, particularly in cell-cell communication, mitochondrial function, cell apoptosis/senescence, and calcium handling in the endoplasmic reticulum of endothelial and smooth muscle cells.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct cardiovascular physiological and molecular biological experiments using dissected mouse vessels and freshly isolated vascular cells.
  • Analyze research data using various computer software.
  • Generate preliminary data for grant applications.
  • Write drafts of manuscripts.
  • Coordinate with other investigators for lab research.
  • Maintain the function of lab equipment and manage lab research records, including methodological approaches and animal protocols.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in biomedical sciences, M.D., or equivalent degree.
  • A strong record of productivity in cardiovascular physiology (e.g., assessment of cardiac function using echocardiogram and/or catheterization in mice).
  • Experience in isometric tension measurement in mouse small vessels, or electrophysiological experiments using endothelial and smooth muscle cells isolated from mouse hearts and lungs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Theoretical and working knowledge in advanced cardiovascular physiology.
  • Demonstrated ability to dissect small arteries (coronary and pulmonary arteries) for isometric tension experiments.
  • Ability to evaluate cardiac and vascular function using the Millar system or echocardiogram in mice, and isolate heart and lung vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells.
  • Aseptic techniques for cell culture.
  • Experience in Western blot, immunoprecipitation, PCR, qPCR, and FACS.
  • Ability to contribute to experimental design, analysis, interpretation of results, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience assisting with writing scientific manuscripts and contributing to teamwork in physiological and molecular biological experiments.
  • Practical time management skills to plan and organize work efficiently.
  • Skill working with animals and human tissues.
  • Knowledge of SnapGene, GraphPad, EndNote, and MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and genuine interest in scientific research.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.
