Postdoctoral Associate - Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University seeks a postdoctoral associate to develop innovative approaches to hurricane risk assessment through a new industry-academic partnership. This is a two- or three-year position supported by direct industry partnership and Atkinson Center funding, renewed annually upon satisfactory progress and funding availability.

Responsibilities

• Development of novel approaches to synthetic storm generation (40%)
• Implementation of counterfactual analysis for historical storms (25%)
• Integration of climate pattern effects (e.g., ENSO) into risk models (25%)
• Regular engagement with industry partners and the scientific community (10%)

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, Climate Science, or related field.
• Strong capabilities in hurricane modeling and risk assessment.
• Experience in tropical cyclone dynamics and thermodynamics, statistical/machine learning approaches to weather prediction, risk assessment and catastrophe modeling, high-performance computing and large dataset manipulation.
• Proficiency in scientific programming (Python, R, MATLAB, or equivalent); experience with atmospheric modeling or large-scale climate datasets is recommended.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for scientific and public-facing audiences; ability to manage project timelines and deliverables independently.
• Driving is not required.

Pay Range: $62,232.00 - $88,745.00 (CALS hiring rate for this position is $63,480).
