Join to apply for the Postdoctoral Appointee - Experimental Low-Energy Nuclear Physics role at Argonne National Laboratory

The Low-Energy Nuclear Physics Research Group (LER) of the Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory seeks outstanding individuals to fill an open postdoctoral position within the Group. LER performs world-leading research in nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental symmetries, and nuclear data. The Group also manages and operates world-class detector systems as part of the ATLAS accelerator facility, a DOE supported national user facility for low-energy nuclear physics research. Besides high intensity stable beams, ATLAS provides world-unique rare isotope beams from either the nuCARIBU (Californium Rare Ion Breeder Upgrade) facility or from the Argonne In-Flight Radioactive Ion Separator, RAISOR. In addition, members of the group are leading experimental programs at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB).

Information on the activities of the Group and the Division can be found at https://www.anl.gov/phy. The Argonne Physics Division has programs in low energy and medium energy nuclear physics, nuclear theory, nuclear data, accelerator R&D and operates the DOE Office of Nuclear Physics National User Facility, the Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS).

As an equal employment opportunity employer, and in accordance with our core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity and teamwork, Argonne National Laboratory is committed to a safe and welcoming workplace that fosters collaborative scientific discovery and innovation. Argonne encourages everyone to apply for employment. Argonne is committed to nondiscrimination and considers all qualified applicants for employment without regard to any characteristic protected by law.

Argonne employees, and certain guest researchers and contractors, are subject to particular restrictions related to participation in Foreign Government Sponsored or Affiliated Activities, as defined and detailed in United States Department of Energy Order 486.1A. Failure to obtain or maintain such government access authorization could result in the withdrawal of a job offer or future termination of employment.

Position Requirements

Candidates considered for the position must have:

  • Recently received or near completion of their Ph.D. in nuclear physics or related discipline within the last 5 years.
  • Experience at conceiving and executing experimental research projects, data analysis, physics interpretations, and reporting of the results.
  • A strong background in the field of Experimental Nuclear Physics.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

In addition, a preference will be given to candidates with experience in studies of exotic nuclei using gamma-ray detector arrays for either in-beam or decay measurements.

Postdocs have an initial term of 1 year and can be renewed in 1 year increments; up to a total of 3 years depending on funding and performance. The expected starting date is Q3/Q4 of 2025.

Interested applicants must apply via Workday. In addition, please forward your CV and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to Dr. Dariusz Seweryniak (seweryniak@anl.gov) and Kaitlin Raimondi (PHYHR@anl.gov ).
