Job description

Postdoctoral Appointee - Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging

Join to apply for the Postdoctoral Appointee - Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging role at Argonne National Laboratory.

Position Overview

The X-ray Science Division (XSD) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to develop novel coherent X-ray diffraction techniques for 3D imaging of crystalline structures. The main focus will be on developing high-fidelity simulations and algorithms to enable Bragg coherent diffraction imaging, incorporating x-ray ptychography and coded aperture methods to create robust 3D imaging techniques.

Project Aims
  1. Create an accurate "digital twin" of the experiment through end-to-end simulation of x-ray propagation, scattering, and detection, building on ongoing work at APS with realistic sample simulations.
  2. Use the digital twin to develop experimental methods and algorithms for robust phase retrieval, expanding on recent ideas using ptychography and phase masks.
Responsibilities
  • Lead at least one of the project aims and participate in experimental testing.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams at Argonne.
Position Requirements
  • Ph.D. in materials science, physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or related field within the last five years.
  • Experience with x-ray physics or optical wave modeling.
  • Proficiency in Python programming.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Alignment with Argonne’s core values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with coherent diffraction imaging or x-ray microscopy.
  • Knowledge of crystallography and atomic-scale simulations.
  • Interest or experience in machine learning frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing and inverse problems.
Additional Details

Position type: Full-time, Long-term (Fixed Term). Salary range: $70,758 - $117,925. Benefits included. Argonne is an equal opportunity employer committed to a safe and inclusive workplace.
