Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA, seeks a Spatially Resolved Soft X-ray Reflectometry Postdoctoral Fellow to develop micro-focus soft x-ray reflectometry and magnetic reflectometry capabilities at the ALS. You will implement focusing optics, build instrumentation, and run synchrotron experiments.

Collaborate on data pipelines, analyze experiments, and contribute to publications and presentations, advancing microscale characterization of interfaces in functional materials.

Qualifications

• PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science or equivalent.
• Sound knowledge and keen interest in x-ray scattering, diffraction, or microscopy.
• Ability to safely perform independent hands-on work in an experimental endstation.

Responsibilities

• Develop instrumentation and data analysis for micro-focus soft x-ray reflectometry.
• Perform soft X-ray reflectometry experiments at specified beamlines.
• Analyze data in Python or with established software; write codes as needed.
• Collaborate on ML-assisted analysis of large multi-dimensional datasets.
• Publish results in peer‑reviewed journals and present at conferences.
• Engage with other research teams and contribute to a positive research culture.
