Job description

Postdoc in Fully Coupled Wave-Sea Ice Modeling in the Earth System

We seek a postdoctoral scientist with a background in physics, mathematics, oceanic, cryospheric, atmospheric or planetary sciences to couple a sea ice model to the oceanic wave component of the DOE Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). The position focuses on studying the consequences of wave-ice coupling on polar weather, global climate and coastal environments, including quantifying potential increases in wave activity along Arctic coasts due to diminishing perennial sea ice. The successful applicant will work with mentors in high-resolution coupled earth system modeling and will simulate global atmosphere-ocean-cryosphere feedbacks from surface marine waves that attenuate in ice-covered seas."

"The tools used in this project include a state-of-the-art, community-developed wave model embedded in E3SM, and the effect of oceanic waves on sea ice floe size and thickness distributions will be simulated using Icepack, the CICE Consortium saline ice physics package."

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement coupled wave-sea ice modeling components within E3SM.
  • Quantify and analyze how wave-ice coupling affects polar weather, climate, and coastal environments.
  • Investigate changes in wave activity along Arctic coasts related to shrinking sea ice cover.
  • Collaborate with researchers in the InteRFACE program and the parallel E3SM Coastal Waves project.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences; contribute to the international geoscience community.
  • Develop and apply new analysis methods, including machine learning, to leverage observations such as ICESat-2 and in-situ polar measurements.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in geophysics, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, oceanic, cryospheric, atmospheric or planetary modeling, physics, or applied mathematics.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to disseminate research results.
  • Experience with sea ice or wave modeling is beneficial, but candidates from other computational physics areas are encouraged to apply.
  • Proficiency in high-performance computing languages (Fortran90, C, C++, Julia) and scripting/data-analysis languages (Unix scripting, Python, MATLAB, R).
