Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to develop separation methods using mass spectrometry, microfluidics, MEMS, and to study hydrogen isotopes in irradiated ceramics and alloys for tritium technology. You will perform ToF-SIMS, SEM, and XRD analyses, and interpret large data sets with simulations in a fast-paced team.

Applicants should have recent PhD in chemical/materials/nuclear engineering or chemistry, with strong hands-on MS and vacuum instrument

Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field completed within the last 5 years and demonstrated expertise with advanced materials characterization equipment and data analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with vacuum instruments and advanced analytical techniques.
  • Experience with multiple characterization methods including mechanical testing and high-resolution microscopy is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform experimental research to evaluate irradiation effects on mechanical and thermophysical properties of nuclear ceramics and fusion materials.
  • Characterize irradiated materials using TEM, SEM, SIMS, APT, and XRD.
  • Set up vacuum pumps, flow meters, and microfluidic reactors to study gas mixtures containing hydrogen isotopes via mass spectrometry.
  • Analyze mass spectrometry and microscopy data and coordinate with simulations.
  • Disseminate results through publications, reports, and collaborations.
