Job summary

Novartis Group of Companies is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the Biomedical Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in San Diego, CA. The role focuses on developing foundation models for high-content cellular imaging to accelerate AI-powered drug discovery.

The position is full-time for up to three years, starting October 1, 2026, onsite in San Diego. Ideal candidates hold a PhD and have experience with Python and modern DL frameworks, HPC or cloud resources, and vision

Qualifications

PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific discipline required.
PhD conferred in 2026 only.
Demonstrated record of scientific achievement (publications, presentations, patents, or equivalent).
Strong commitment to learning, innovation, and professional development.
Proficiency in Python and modern deep learning frameworks with hands-on GPU experience.
Experience training deep learning models on HPC or cloud infrastructure with reproducible code.
Working knowledge of vision foundation models, including self-supervised learning and vision transformers.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

Develop vision foundation models for high-content cellular imaging using state-of-the-art self-supervised learning techniques.
Design robust evaluation protocols measuring generalization across assays and imaging conditions.
Curate large-scale public and internal microscopy datasets and establish data quality standards.
Extend models to multimodal settings, integrating imaging with other data modalities for drug discovery.
Build scalable training and inference pipelines across HPC and cloud infrastructure with reproducible code.
Propose innovative modeling and evaluation methods to advance the team’s direction.
Collaborate with data scientists across disease areas and publish results.
