Job summary

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) atUC Berkeley invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in auroral and subauroral optical phenomena. The successful candidate will work with Dr. L Claire Gasque and Dr.

Brian Harding on magnetosphere–ionosphere–thermosphere coupling using ground-based and satellite data, and physics-based models. Responsibilities include data analysis, model development, software creation, and contributing to publications and conferences.

Qualifications

  • PhD (or equivalent international degree) required at start.
  • Enrolled in a PhD program accepted.
  • Strong scientific programming skills with Python experience.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze ground-based optical observations from auroral imagers and spectrographs (TREx data).
  • Develop methods to identify and characterize auroral phenomena.
  • Construct and analyze event catalogs and correlate ground-based and satellite data.
  • Analyze Swarm and DMSP satellite measurements to study plasma conditions and currents.
  • Develop models of ionosphere-thermosphere coupling and compare with observations.
  • Create scientific software and reproducible analysis tools and share data publicly.
  • Lead and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and conferences.
