Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks Postdoctoral Research Associates to advance AI-enabled mobility, digital twins, and cooperative driving automation. The role involves large-scale data, high-fidelity simulation, and real-world field deployments across transportation systems.

You will develop AI-ready datasets, predictive models, and eco-driving/optimization methods, collaborating with public agencies, laboratories, universities, and industry partners to demonstrate scalable mobility

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, operations research, robotics, data science, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated research experience in vehicle dynamics simulation, or AI/ML for transportation, or digital twins and simulation.
• Proficiency in Python and experience with C++, MATLAB or Simulink.
• Experience developing computational models or data-driven methods and evaluating them with data.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and in teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with scholarly publications or reports.

Responsibilities

• Develop AI-ready datasets, digital twins, predictive models, and scenarios using multimodal data.
• Develop AI-based control and optimization for connected vehicles and smart infrastructure.
• Integrate research algorithms with vehicle/energy models, simulation platforms, and testing systems.
• Plan and conduct testing and evaluation through simulation, VIL/soft hardware-in-the-loop, dynamometer, and on-road experiments.
• Deploy technologies in real-world environments in collaboration with agencies, operators, labs, universities, and industry.
• Evaluate impacts on energy efficiency, mobility, reliability, and resilience at multiple levels.
• Produce reusable research software, datasets, models, and deployment guidance; publish findings at conferences.
• Align work with ORNL values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service; promote equal opportunity.
