Job summary

UT-Battelle invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Modeling, Controls, and AI for Thermal Systems at ORNL. This role focuses on data-driven and physics-based modeling to optimize design and operation of HVAC, water heating, and data center cooling systems.

The candidate will work across system and component levels, integrating AI/ML methods for predictive maintenance and autonomous control.

Qualifications

• PhD in a STEM field within the last five years.
• Experience modeling and optimizing complex engineering systems.
• Strong background in thermal-fluid sciences and control theory.

Responsibilities

• Develop physics-based and data-driven models of thermal systems.
• Validate models against experimental data and improve accuracy.
• Design and test model predictive and adaptive control for HVAC and related systems.
• Integrate sensor data into closed-loop control and test with hardware-in-the-loop.
