The Post Doctoral Associate will lead research projects at Rutgers University to investigate how lipids, lipoproteins, and related factors influence neurodegenerative processes. The role includes developing cell-based and other preclinical models, designing mechanistic studies, and analyzing clinical/omics data to translate findings.
Mentoring students, contributing to grants, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals are expected.
Recruitment/Posting Title: Post Doctoral Associate - Specializing in Cell Biology
Department: Food Science
Salary Minimum: $63,968.
The final salary offer may be determined by several factors, including, but not limited to, the candidate's qualifications, experience, and expertise, and availability of department or grant funds to support the position. We also take into consideration market benchmarks, if and when appropriate, and internal equity to ensure fair compensation relative to the university's broader compensation structure. We are committed to offering competitive and flexible compensation packages to attract and retain top talent.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated researcher that will lead research projects to investigate the role of lipids, lipoproteins and related factors in neurodegenerative disorders. The research may include but is not limited to 1) developing, validating, improving and applying cell-based and other preclinical models to understand the functions of lipids, lipoproteins and related factors in influencing processes relevant to neurodegeneration, including neurovascular and inflammatory dysfunction; 2) designing and conducting mechanistic studies to characterize cellular responses to lipid and lipoprotein perturbations, including changes in gene expression, enzyme activities, cellular phenotypes, and metabolite production; and 3) performing statistical analyses of human clinical and/or omics data to evaluate human relevance of findings from preclinical models. In addition, the successful candidate will mentor graduate and undergraduate students, contribute to grant proposals, and publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Position Status: Full Time
Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Food Science, Neuroscience/Neurobiology, Nutritional Science, Physiology, Vascular Biology, or a related discipline; demonstrated experience in mammalian cell culture and cell biology techniques; strong experimental design, research, organizational and communication skills.
Strong biological research background, analytical skills and other relevant skills.
Experience in at least one of the following areas is highly desirable: (i) biological models relevant to neurodegeneration, neuroinammation, blood-brain barrier/neurovascular biology, vascular dysfunction, or lipid metabolism; (ii) strong understanding of metabolism, including the roles of lipoprotein and lipid oxidation in the development and progression of chronic diseases; (iii) experience working with human clinical/omics data or preclinical animal models; (iv) strong statistical and computational analysis skills, including the use of bioinformatics tools or pipelines; and/or (v) experience with analytical platforms such as chromatography and mass spectrometry in omics research.
Equipment related to the relevant biological assays, chemical analyses, data analyses and other analyses.
The candidate should be able to lift up to 5 kg and routinely perform laboratory tasks involving pipetting and handling of human and rodent biospecimens; the candidate should be able to work next to a biosafety hood and/or fume hood. Other relevant physical demands and work environment may be applied depending on the specific experiments.
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the undergraduate schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agricultural business and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
