Job Title:

Special Education Teacher Positive Behavior Support

Position Function:

The person filling this position plans, leads, facilitates, and provides instruction to maximize student learning in the least restrictive environment. This role follows each student's standards-based IEP to ensure appropriate curriculum-based instruction.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Plan lessons according to state standards and student IEPs.
  2. Participate in pre-assessment teams to determine the need for comprehensive evaluations; initiate, schedule, and attend IEP meetings; collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to diagnose needs; structure and implement IEPs for students.
  3. Define, structure, and communicate daily expectations aligned with standards and IEPs, including course goals, objectives, methods, and activities.
  4. Communicate with parents, staff, and stakeholders regarding instructional strategies, student progress, and outcomes.
  5. Report and input student progress data; coordinate schedules and communicate with all relevant parties.
  6. Provide differentiated instruction based on individual student levels and learning modalities.
  7. Manage classroom behavior through structure, routines, communication, and individualized strategies; adapt content and reading levels as needed; support students in achieving academic and social goals through individual and small group work.
  8. Offer various learning opportunities, including multimedia, assistive technology, and support for regular classroom teachers.
  9. Prepare and display reinforcement activities to encourage participation.
  10. Evaluate student progress based on standards and IEPs.
  11. Design assessments, including diagnostic techniques, standardized tests, and teacher-created assessments.
  12. Create reinforcement systems aligned with assessments and learning objectives.
  13. Develop grading systems that motivate and encourage participation; maintain and report student data regularly.
  14. Model respectful and appropriate interactions with students and staff.
  15. Establish clear classroom rules, routines, and expectations tailored to student needs.
  16. Design classroom management systems for behavior and social interactions.
  17. Maintain a clean, organized classroom environment conducive to learning.
  18. Keep accurate records on attendance, needs, assessments, and discipline; supervise paraprofessionals.
  19. Perform duties with mobility, agility, and focus necessary for safety and instruction.
Additional Duties:

Assist with other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Equipment:

Use of SMART boards, iPads, and standard office equipment required, adhering to district guidelines.

Travel:

Limited travel between schools and offices may be necessary.

Physical and Mental Demands:
  • Maintain good physical health; assist with student self-care and safety.
  • Work in typical school environments and outdoors during activities.

Qualification Profile:
  • Kansas teaching license.
  • Master's in special education or enrollment in a relevant program with a plan on file and waiver obtained.
  • License in Kansas for K-12 at the Adaptive Level (High Incident).
