Job summary

Newburyport Bank is seeking a Portfolio Manager to oversee commercial portfolio management for assigned loans. You will collaborate with lenders and the Commercial Loan Administrator to ensure high quality credit administration and risk control.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of credit experience, with strong communication and regulatory knowledge. This on-site position emphasizes accuracy, timely documentation, and proactive risk management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of credit experience and demonstrated commercial credit skills.
  • Basic experience with loan origination software (LOS) preferred, and knowledge of commercial deposit and treasury products.
  • Proficiency with office applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and email, with excellent oral and written communication.
  • Professional demeanor and maturity, with the ability to work effectively with customers, employees, vendors, and board members.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a key resource to Commercial Lenders throughout the approval process, ensuring required underwriting information is received and supporting management of portfolios, sales efforts, and approvals.
  • Ensures loans, renewals, extensions, and documentation are completed accurately, timely, and in compliance with credit policy and applicable terms.
  • Monitors financial performance, covenants, construction projects, borrowing availability, and portfolio risk ratings; identifies exceptions or violations and initiates risk rating changes as needed.
  • Prepares Watched Asset Reports for loans downgraded below a 6 rating and drafts commentary on performance and covenant changes.
  • Prepares and coordinates internal and external documentation, including term sheets, applications, appraisals, call memos, and loan modifications, and facilitates examinations.
  • Supports client relationship management and engagement with current and prospective clients in partnership with Lenders, coordinating with CLA on overdraft decisions.
  • Maintains knowledge of Bank products, services, procedures, policies, and regulatory requirements and applies this knowledge daily.
  • Ensures adherence to laws, regulations, and bank policies by verifying transactions and safeguarding the bank’s interests.

Newburyport Bank is a community bank supported by the strength of our shared services organization, River Run, and banking affiliates, Pentucket Bank and Rollstone Bank and Trust.


The Portfolio Manager manages all aspects of Commercial Portfolio management for assigned portfolio loans and collaborates with the Lender and Commercial Loan Administrator (CLA) to maintain high quality credit administration and risk management.


Essential Job Functions


  • Serves as a key resource to Commercial Lenders throughout the approval process, ensuring required underwriting information is received and supporting the management of existing portfolios, sales efforts, and approvals.

  • Ensures loans, renewals, extensions, and documentation are completed accurately, timely, and in compliance with credit policy, banking regulations, and applicable loan terms.

  • Monitors financial performance, covenants, construction projects, borrowing availability, and portfolio risk ratings; identifies exceptions or violations, manages waiver processes, and initiates risk rating changes as needed.

  • Prepares Watched Asset Reports for loans downgraded below a 6 rating, completes required quarterly reporting, and drafts commentary regarding changes in performance, financial conditions, covenant reviews, or other issues requiring further explanation.

  • Prepares and coordinates internal and external documentation, including term sheets, applications, appraisal bid requests, call memos, commitment letters, post-closing memos, and loan modifications, and facilitates internal and external examinations.

  • Supports client relationship management and engagement with current and prospective clients in partnership with Lenders, and coordinates with CLA on overdraft decisions and follow-up as needed.

  • Maintains current knowledge of Bank products, services, procedures, policies, and applicable regulatory and compliance requirements through team meetings and required training, applying this knowledge to daily operations.

  • Ensures adherence to federal and state laws, regulations, Bank policies, and BSA requirements by verifying transactions and account balances, preventing violations, minimizing risk, and safeguarding the Bank’s interests.


Requirements

Qualifications, Experience, and Education


  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business Administration preferred, along with a minimum of three years of credit experience and demonstrated commercial credit skills.

  • Basic experience with loan origination software (LOS) preferred, as well as knowledge of commercial deposit and treasury products.

  • Proficiency with office applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and email, with excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Professional demeanor and maturity, with the ability to work effectively with customers, employees, vendors, and members of the Board of Directors.
