Job summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a Porter to ensure the facility is clean, safe, and sanitary. Responsibilities include cleaning, minor repairs, and assisting with work orders. Candidates should have a High School Diploma and be able to lift heavy objects. A valid NYS Driver’s License is preferred.

Job description

Overview

Under the direction of the Facility Manager, the Porter helps to ensure the facility is properly cleaned, safe, and sanitary for all residents, staff, and visitors. The Porter assists with work orders, minor repairs, and cleaning of vacant units within the regulatory timeframe of four hours.

Responsibilities

  1. The Porter reports directly to the Facility Manager regarding all janitorial and facility-related issues and immediately reports major repairs, hazards, defects, or supply needs to the Superintendent.
  2. The Porter cleans and sanitizes all assigned vacant units within the DHS regulatory timeline of 4 hours post-discharge.
  3. The Porter cleans all public areas and workspaces as assigned.
  4. The Porter completes all work orders as assigned.
  5. The Porter empties all trash from the compactor as assigned.
  6. The Porter maintains floors (strip, wax, buff, mop, vacuum) as assigned.
  7. The Porter cleans and sanitizes all bathrooms as assigned.
  8. The Porter makes minor repairs and paints the facility and property as assigned.
  9. The Porter assists in moving furniture and belongings of clients into and out of units as assigned.
  10. The Porter assists with ground cleanup and snow removal as assigned.
  11. The Porter stores and retrieves deliveries and supplies as assigned.
  12. The Porter participates in any special projects as assigned.
  13. The Porter is responsible for proper care and maintenance of tools, supplies, and equipment used in duties.
  14. The Porter drives the agency vehicle as needed and tracks mileage in the van logbook.
  15. The Porter handles interoffice mail deliveries to DHS and DHQ as needed.
  16. The Porter maintains a safe and sanitary workspace, following OSHA regulations.
  17. Employees may be asked to work at other shelters operated by the Salvation Army to meet program needs, at the discretion of the Director of Shelters or Department Heads.
  18. Additional tasks may be assigned at the discretion of leadership.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; experience with disadvantaged populations is a plus.
  • Ability to lift at least fifty pounds and work an eight-hour shift primarily standing and moving.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks; familiarity with basic cleaning equipment; repair skills and technical knowledge of the physical plant are preferred.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to become certified as a Fire Safety Coordinator is strongly desired.
