Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has been providing social services for over 125 years, offering 160+ programs for various community members. POP Development, part of Catholic Charities, focuses on affordable housing, transforming vacant lands and buildings to serve low-income populations, including seniors, families, and homeless individuals. To date, it has created 4,330 units and emphasizes aging in place and sustainability.

Statement of the Job

The Porter/Maintenance Worker is a key member of the maintenance team, responsible for ensuring safe, affordable housing for tenants of POP Management. Responsibilities include maintaining a cleaning schedule, preparing tenant apartments for occupancy, and collaborating with on-site staff and vendors. Tasks involve sweeping, mopping, waxing, vacuuming, performing repairs, maintaining mechanical systems, and ensuring cleanliness and safety of common areas. The role also requires snow and ice removal.

  • Coordinate with the Superintendent for property maintenance.
  • Perform routine repairs and document via Service Request Orders.
  • Collaborate with vendors, contractors, and monitor mechanical systems.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety in indoor and outdoor common areas.
  • Follow a daily cleaning schedule for floors, doors, windows, elevators, lobby, offices, laundry, restrooms, and community spaces.
  • Prepare tenant apartments, including cleaning, painting, and floor maintenance.
  • Remove snow and ice promptly and thoroughly.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience may suffice.
  • Experience with cleaning and maintenance equipment such as vacuum cleaners, waxers, buffers, snow blowers, lawn mowers, etc.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Russian) are a plus.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly.
