The Idaho Transportation Department is hiring a Port-of-Entry Inspector Trainee for the Lewiston Port-of-Entry location. The incumbent will inspect commercial vehicles and enforce compliance with laws and regulations governing commercial vehicle traffic. This position is considered an underfill for the Port-of-Entry Inspector.

The starting hourly rate is $18.70. Upon completion of the probationary period, passing the inspector trainee test, and completing six (6) months of service as a trainee, the employee will be promoted to Inspector classification with a salary increase to $20.39 per hour.

Examples of Duties:

  1. Inspect commercial vehicles and materials for size, weight, safety, and hazards using electronic devices and visual inspection.
  2. Determine if licenses and permits are current and valid. Verify driver qualifications including licenses, medical cards, and logbooks.
  3. Issue and sell temporary and oversize permits and registrations.
  4. Use computer terminals to check tax status, registration, and licenses. Collect fees for permits, registrations, and citations.
  5. Operate cash register and account for monies received.
  6. Prepare and deliver bank deposits.
  7. Issue warnings or citations for violations and receive fines and bonds.
  8. Write incident and activity reports.
  9. Provide directions and information on road conditions and travel facilities.
  10. Work various shifts, including weekends.

Minimum Qualifications: You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position. Ensure your resume or work history supports your meeting the minimum qualifications. Failure to do so may disqualify you from consideration.

  • Some knowledge of English, including proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling; Windows or comparable operating system; word processing and electronic mail.
  • Experience with basic arithmetic; interpreting and applying rules and regulations; writing reports; dealing with the public in stressful situations.
  • Valid driver's license.

Additional Information: Trainees become Port-of-Entry Inspectors after successful training. They learn to enforce laws governing commercial vehicles and are granted limited peace officer authority. They may work with hostile vehicle operators and perform light janitorial work such as sweeping and mopping. The position requires working a 24-hour rotating shift, lifting objects up to 40 pounds, crawling, bending, standing for up to 6 hours, and working in all weather conditions. Uniforms are provided, and dress and grooming standards must be followed.

Department Requirements: Background checks are conducted before appointment and annually. Persons convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors are ineligible for employment with limited peace officer authority. Review the ITD Background disqualifiers.
